RC crawlers?

Hi all.
I was thinking about getting a rock crawler RC so my son and I cna build it together, What is a good starting point? I'm not looking into dumping huge money right off the bat, But I'm sure I could manage $3-400, I am fully aware they can get quite expensive.
What are good brands? I dont really care what the body looks like, Any thoughts would be great, I'm not in a huge hurry to get one, Just doing a little research.
I have built a few old RC's as a kid, But nothing like the new rock crawlers.
Thanks

For the money that you want to spend Axial is a good start. If you just want to get a little taste of it the rc crawler you could by a redcat rs10 for about $135.

Gravedigger, I appreciate that, I was hoping to have a little father son wrenching time, However, If I change my mind and yours is till available I will be in contact.
Newtoy and Jesser04, Sounds good, I have done a little research on the Axial AX10 and the Losi Night Crawler, Most of my RC dealings have been with Tayama, But the last one I built is almost 20 years old, I still have it :)
Thanks again, Please feel free to add any info you may have good or bad.

I went with the Axial AX-10 because they're fairly cheap, and parts are everywhere. I'm into mine about $250 for everything. Look around Ebay and you can find some decent deals on kits.

I have a ax10 and a losi comp crawler, losi hands down is superior. The worm is the only way to go and D lux is selling chromo heat treated worms for longer and smother life.

Too much angle on those coilovers, will cause cavitation and not good over the fast terrain. Drag link too short. Go straight to dana 60 front and 14bolt rear. Really needs a cage. Jarritos rots the liver.
