Oh man, after this, I do not want to touch a bumper for awhile. Im sure I made it harder then it had to be, however, I did not have some of the tools I would liked to have, and I did not plan it out as well as I could have.

With that said, this was my first "build" as it were. So, it was a great learning experience.

When you get to the tire carrier portion you might look at some of the dual shear hinges from Comp4x4. I used one of their simple hinges on my homemade bumper. It's just a 1" bolt with bronze bushings. I have a spindle type hinge on my Land Cruiser tire carrier and it's great but this simple one on the Tacoma is working just fine and is much cheaper and simpler.

I boxed the outside of the hinge for added strength, but it comes with a top and bottom plate made of 1/4". You can get the hinge tube/bolt in just about any size you want. My bumper was a 3x5 tube so I got the 5" tall hinge.

For my back bumper build, I'm starting to think about dual swings, left and right. One for the spare and one for a couple/three jerry cans. I'd make the jerry can side removable for non-wheeling times. Initially I was thinking of some kind of a rack or something above the tire, but this would eliminate/reduce that.

I want to use 4x6x3/16 for the bumper itself, and maybe use it as an air tank/collector for my air compressor. If it's 5 ft long, it comes out to about a 6 gal air tank. Fill it up at home then us the portable to top it off while airing back up.

Add hi-lift and pull-pal mounts and I'm about there. That's my next project I think.

I really like this design. $15 total cost for the hinge instead of like $100 for some machined nonsense with high speed bearings, and it's probably stronger too.

That also looks like the one I may end up getting. Much cheaper, which is always nice.

I also am glad to hear it has worked well. Some times the simplest design is the best.

One thing I like about that hinge is that if you get any slop it will be in the bronze bushings not in the hinge sleeve. So you can always replace the bushings and the 1" bolt for like new performance again.

I think the carrier portion will be a good winter project....
