Recommendation for a new hand held GPS

I have always used maps (they never run out of batteries, and are simple to use). But I figure it might be time to get up to date with some technology, and get a GPS. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have been looking a little bit, and there is a ridiculous amount of different manufacturers, and models out there. I am looking for one that I can download new maps to, has a relatively large screen, and has a compass.

You just described probably 95% of modern GPSes. If that's all you need then go get the least expensive Garmin and you'll be happy. For handheld, I'd stick to Garmin, Delorme or maybe Lowrance.
