A friend of mine asked me if I would go with him to do a trail in Vernal called Red Mountain, here is a article about it I found on the web http://www.4x4now.com/trutvr.htm. We are doing it as an exploration so I was wondering if any one has done it and is there anything special we should know?

Also does anyone want to come? We are running it Saturday June 30 if we can find it, a atv shop there is going to give us directions to it. There are just two Jeeps and a Rover going and none of us have done it, all are welcome.

Crap, I REALLY want to do this run, but I have a sat and sun trip already lined up. I did some research on this trail and this much I did find:

Taylor side trailhead N40 32.706 W109 35.217
Steinaker exit off 191 N40 32.750 W109 31.521
Steinaker trailhead N40 33..722 W109 31.625
Cabin (Approx.) N40 35.252 W109 33.303

That looks like a sweet trail! I was under the impression that there was no serious wheeling around Vernal.
Guess I was wrong.

There is a few areas to wheel. Out between Lapoint and Vernal on SR121 out in the BLM area. And then there is the old Comp area out near Naples.

We are trying to get on the map out here. I only know of 3 people with built rigs that want to play in the rocks.

I play on some private land. The owner thinks I am crazy for wanting to drive on all those stupid rocks as he like to say.

Been there, but it's been several years. I remember it being pretty fun, and fairly scenic at times.

Well if anyone want to show up, we plan to meet at the dinosaur museum at 9:00 am Saturday morning. It is the only place that we know of that anyone can find. All types of rigs are welcome, we have no clue on how tough the trail is but we will have fun. I will try to GPS is and Google map and post it in the map area. I will also post how it went and pics if I can figure out how.

It's been a while for me as well, but if memory serves me correctly I'd rate the majority of the trail in the 4 range. Most all of the real fun stuff pictured in that old write up is optional. Allow yourself plenty of time because there's a ton of things to play on.

Carl, wasn't that the weekend you got ticketed?? :D

Wasn't that the same trip that had the Samurai that kept popping wheelies because of the ridiculous tire carrier/everything rack on the back?

Hi-larious!

Late update

The trail was a fun one. I would give it a rating of 4 depending on the line you take on the obstacles. Two of us were in locked TJs and the other was in a rear locked Rover. The trail is alot of small trees and brush that make it narrow and will brush your side and drop pine needles in your rig. To see the trail and get the main GPS point to Trail Maps on this site http://www.rockymountainextreme.com/showthread.php?t=45314

The first pic is the trail head start, a steep sand stone incline and the trail is obvious when you get to the top. Next is what the typical trail is like. The third and fourth is the only real tough obstacles, Commando Corner, which you will need lockers to take the hard line. The last is the log cabin at the top before you start to head down. It is a fun trail and if you are in the Vernal are I would recommend that you run it. There are also a ton stuff to play on the trail if you look for them or try them going the other way plus the area had alot explorable places. Here is a Vid of going up Commando Corner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSRnAoD-db0 The rover had to take the easiest line to the left and other TJ could only do the moderate line do to only having a 3" lift.

My new rig is off the reservation so I can bring my quad out for playtime!! I will be checking that out in a couple weeks for sure!! I am like Meat...I run solo on the quad a LOT! I have been able to see a lot of neat stuff around the Vernal area that I think people don't realize is out here!
