Ok, this is sci-fi, so if you're not into, read no further. If you are, you probably already want to see this if, like me, you missed it in the theater. There isn't much I can say without ruining it, but I'll try.
Story unfolds aboard a ship, going somewhere-- but where is the crew? How long have they been there? What are those noises? WHERE IS EVERYONE!?! and what is wrong with the people who are left? Pandorum is some kind of space madness, but who's suffering from it and who isn't? And where the $%!@#$ are they and how long have they been gone!?!? ... And what ARE those things you think you saw?
Pretty suspenseful, and no real dead spots in it-- for which I am very thankful. I hate movies that stop in their tracks without reason. This has none of that. Couple storylines going at once, building on each other.. if the movie was longer some of the details could have been fleshed out, but you kind of forget that as the plot plays out....
The ending goes down like other movies of similar flavor and it's satisfactorily tidy... but not cloyingly so, just a neat ending. This definitely didn't have the feel of a movie trying too hard to be something it isn't-- it's a story, played out onscreen, that ends. No ambiguous baloney, no lingering doubts, "standard" if you must, but entertaining enough.
I will compare it to "Event Horizon" with maybe less of the psychological scarring that some people got from that movie. And it is by no means a masterpiece, but it is good solid tradecraft, which is enough to recommend it in and of itself.
84 Tacoma points for suspense, novelty, and a "tastes great! less filling!" sense of satisfaction. Check it out if you're into sci-fi, esp. if you like reading short-story collections. It kind of has that kind of pacing.
