So I have a '96 zj 5.2, bad 44re trans. I'm looking to replace it with a 46re out of a 1998 5.9 as I have access to one for less than $500 with 114k miles on it. I know that on the '98 5.9 zj's they were equipped with the 46re passenger side starter, all electrical are the same as the 5.2, and they have the same bolt pattern. What I can not find out through a couple hours of research is if the 46re is longer than the 44re and if I will need the 5.9 torque converter and flex plate or if I should use the ones from the 5.2 because of external/internal balancing issues on the 5.2 vs 5.9.
All in all my questions are: 46re, different length than 44re? And flex plate and TC, should I snag the ones from a 5.9 or use the ones I've got from the 5.2?
Thanks for the info.
