Retaining wall Q's

What's the cheapest/easiest way to backfill an area to extend usable parking? It'll need approx 4' of retaining wall for about 15'. Rail ties? I'll try to post photos tomorrow of what I'm looking to do.

Cheapest I would think is still rail road ties. I built a 5 foot high x 100 foot wall years ago. They were the cheapest route by far 10 years ago. It's still holding strong with all my equipment on top of it with no slide out at all.

My brother owns RedWolf Developmental Rock Walls and he does stuff like that all the time. (even did the exact thing you're talking about at my dad's house)

FYI, anything over four feet needs to be stamped by an engineer...

well staked, sloped railroad ties, w/gravel backfill works very well back east, pretty unstable ground there too.

Glad I clicked this thread, I am going to be doing a retaining wall in the back yard soon, keep the ideas coming.

not sure how much room or how much rail road ties are, but i got a buddy who used those concrete blocks they use with roads, the ones that are 2' high, 4 feet long an 1 1/2' thick. i believe they cost him $19 each, they were used ones. but then you have to get them into place somehow. just another idea

Looks like I should be just under 4' at the tallest end of the wall. My goal is to do this as cheaply as possible, finding free and otherwise cheap materials on KSL to finish.

I would go with RR ties but you also want to make sure that you use something to tie them into the slope itself with some type of tie back system (there is some plastic netting that works well for this) as well as setting up drainage
