if you have rifles there's a place (usually at the gun shows) that has these pull through cleaners looks like a piece of rope, they've worked great for us. its nice because they clean the barrell in one pull. I think sportsmans warehouse might sale them.

They're called BoreSnakes, they rock. Great for swabbing the barrels out, but not so good at stubborn buildup. Clean them guns!

I love those things. Really easy to use.

yeah, boresnakes. I was trying to think of the name. Those things are great.
They are good for what they are but they don't replace a cleaning rod, get a good one piece cleaning rod too.

The cop shop they are talking about is the FARM. They are good if you want high cap mags, but they do not have much else in there.

I would suggest sportsmans warehouse. I use Barnes CR10 solvent, and it works great. Just use your cleaning rod, buy a big pack of cotton patches, a little of the solvent, and then some oil, and your gat will be shiny clean.

The boresnakes are alright for a quick clean, but they are not as thorough.

Back from the dead... but I know there are plenty of gun guru's here on RME

Been looking into the BoreSnake and other cleaning options... I think I'm gonna pick one up one of these days. Anyone know who carries them local?

What is a good cleaner/lube oil to run? I've been using Hoppes for years, but I've seen some all in one cleaner, lubes, rust preventers that seem to be all the talk.

How often do you clean your guns?

I still just use Hoppe's #9, I worked at Barnes and just thinking of the smell of CR10 makes me sick.

I don't clean mine anywhere near often enough... many people clean thier guns WAY more than you need to. I have too many to clean regularly, which is why I started buying mostly stainless.

How often is just enough. I clean mine every time I use em....you shoot it, you clean it.

Bore snakes are awesome, Hopes 9 is a good solvent. You can get both at sportsmans or cabellas. I clean every time or at least once a year to keep the rust away.

It's more how many rounds you put through it. While it's true that every single shot will effect the following shot, most guns are still more accurate than the person shooting it even with several hundred rounds between cleaning.

On a blued gun dirt and moisture (this includes your dirty little hand sweat) are both bigger reasons to clean your gun than shooting it. A stainless gun will still rust but it's generally enough to just knock most of the moisture off of it where as with the blued gun you want to hit it with some #9.

As far as a non target shooting .22... clean wha? I know of 10/22's that go multiple thousands of rounds between cleanings and will still hit a squirrel without problems.

Larger rifles if you aren't going for tack driving accuracy a couple or three boxes between cleanings aren't a big deal.

My Berretta usually never gets cleaned until the impact point gets a bit ugly or it starts not feeding so well, which (unless there is an extra amount of dust) is usually 300~400 rounds

To sum up, as far as the actual shooting of the gun it doesn't need to be cleaned as often as most profess, but dirt and moisture can make a cleaning necessary without even shooting it.

I am TERRIBLE with my smoke pole. I can get about 10 shots before it starts loading hard.... then I'll shoot 5 or 6 more until I can't seat the round anymore... then it will sit for months until I want to shoot it again. I knew this going in though, which is why I bought a stainless and I only use 777 which has no sulfur. Front stuffers are fun to shoot, but I am way too lazy.

Edit: All of this only applies if you shoot often, if you are the type that only even looks at your gun once a year, then you'd better clean it after you shoot it ;)

Also some people find cleaning guns to be soothing, if this applies have at it. (want to clean some of mine?)
