Ok, just to get this organized... who's game for a mtn bike ride sometime in October? Not sure on the date yet, but probably the 2nd, 3rd or 4th weekend in Oct. I'm going to plan just one trail, Porcupine Rim. Hopefully we can mix the weekend with wheelin and biking.

I'd like to get shuttled out to the trailhead, I'm too fat to ride from town. I'm alright with riding back into Moab. So who's game? Yellowbronco, Tacoma....?

Official Day for the RME Porcupine Rim ride is Oct 19th!

Sunday, Oct 19th, 2008
Meet at the parking area/trail head for Porcupine Rim at 9:30 am. Be there on time, or be fast and try catching up!

funny

:Dits kinda funny i wentto Moab about two years oge and met DaBears down there. I had never done porcipine rim and he decided to take me out and run my jeep through it. This started at around 6 we just left pizza hut and headed out. I never looked at the map of it but we went and went and went my jeep started having carb problems and no smokes and no diet coke. by midnight he said there was only like two miles left til we hit the road back into moab. But NNNNNOOOO 1am and we find that it turns into a bike trail the rest of the way down. Moral of story, DONT follow DaBears anywhere your bound to get lost and 2: take plenty of supplies but all in all he is the one that showed me RME and have had a great time with everybody on here so yea me just talking ya get used to it!:D

You know, one of my best trips to Moab was when I drove my Toyota on 37's down with my mtn bike in the back. We wheeled Sat, rode Porcupine Rim Sunday and wheeled again Monday. We did Lower & Upper Heldorado and Proving Grounds (I didn't do PG  ) on Sat. Then Pritchett and something else Mon. It was seriously the best trip I've ever had, promise!

It would be cool if you made it Bart, you can probably outride us kids... :hickey: And I'd love to see your inaugural trip in the Buggy.

That'd be fun if we rode together again Curt, far and away from IN! I wouldn't worry too much about the fat part... I'm currently in the worst shape of my life, and the heaviest. :ugh: I think our whole group will look pretty pathetic, at least on the uphill part. The downhill will be a different story, all that extra weight will make us go faster, right?

Sounds like fun. I biked Moab for my first time in August in the 100* heat:eek: with some of my neighbors. We started in the La Sals over 11,000 ft. and finished up on Porcupine Rim for a total of 30 miles.

Nice Wayne! My last Porcupine Rim trip we rode from in town, the 2nd weekend in July. It was 34 miles round trip and somewhere around/over 100* also. We all ran out of water with about 6 miles of trail left. It was a miserable time... :D

I've never rode PR on a bike... What's the majority of the trail like, and how long? I ride a fairly heavy 9 speed downhill... would it be too much work on that type of bike?

The initial climb might be difficult for your bike, do you have a lockout for the rear suspension? I've ridden it 3 times on an old-school Gary Fisher Y frame bike that didn't climb worth a damn. I hated the uphill, but it's about 3 miles of loose, ledgy uphill to the summit and then mostly downhill after that. There are some semi-flat parts, but not too many. I think after the summit is where you'll really enjoy your bike. The last bit of trail had some terrain that you'll have to haul your bike over, some massive rocks and a steep canyon.

Here's some good info-

The real ride begins at the Rim. This is primo downhill advanced technical stuff, dropping off a gazillion small rocky ledges, with the last 3 miles a hairy single-track on the edge of deadly cliffs. From the Rim, you'll drop 2,700 vertical feet to the Colorado River over 11 unforgettable miles.

so... we'll have a relaxing hike up the hill and lunch at the top, you're saying? :D

 Probably... we'll all need a good break at the top. Each time I've ridden up I got my arse handed to me. My friends on hardtails went right up, but they paid for that after we started descending. I think we'll also need to bring a couple good first aid kits and perhaps an AED!

hmmm, that'd be during fall break, and we haven't even been on a wheeling trip yet this fall :-\ I'd have to blow the dust off the bike, but that is how I was introduced to moab after all! I'll talk it over with the wifey, I'm sure it would be on the condition that there was some sort of women's wheelin trip during the bike ride
