3 months ago I went in for my 40 year check up and the dr scolded me bad. My cholesterol numbers were off the chart, literally. He couldn't read them. He told me that I had 3 months to fix it or I was going on drugs. At the time I was 240 lbs.

Soo... Since I really want to see my 4 year old son graduate, get married and have his own kids, I straightened up right away. I went from McD's 1-2 times a day, sometimes 3, to 5 times (tonight) in teh past 3 months. I used to drink 2-4 soda's a day, now it's ~2 a week. Vitamin D milk gone, 1% now. You know, stuff like that.

I just went back in last week for a follow up. I dropped 14 lbs and now my numbers are readable. Some are within range now! woohoo!! But my trigyclerides <sp?> are still above the little range, about 2 times higher than they should be. Even my bad cholesterol is within range now. So I still got put on drugs for the tri's... :( And we'll see in three more months how it looks. He thinks it might just be in my DNA to have high tri's, since I really changed my diet around, but still doesn't like it.

Excersize could probably help, definately not hurt, but since I'm at a computer all day.... I'm getting Jeeperman going, so that's going to start taking me out of the house to the shop more. Hopefully that will start getting me some excersize to make him happier...

WHEN you test your triglycerides can make a difference. I was tested once in the morning immediately after working out and they were sky high.

A little research revealed that the test is merely a snapshot of what is in the blood...and in a fasted state, immediately after a workout, those tryglycerides were fat cells going TO the muscles FROM stored fat, doing what they were supposed to do, not just hanging around.

A follow up test under correct conditions showed levels within the healthy range. The first tester should have made sure that it wasn't immediately following a workout.

Both times were about the same time in the morning, and about the same amount of fasting and physical activity. Dunno, but I think they are accurate.... :-\

Same results under the same conditions would be expected.

My point was that the test should NOT have been after a workout...just in case that was relevant in your case.

For me, subsequent blood tests, in the morning in a fasted state and not after working out, were similar, but very different from that first one. Also expensive, since it was on my dime with the intent of proving the first one wrong.

I guess it was good that I got the bad result, which even though it turned out false, made me sit up straight and take a hard look at my diet. I made a few changes to my diet at the time, and still follow it.

Good luck!

Bringing this thread back up...

I fell off the band wagon.. I just looked at my bank statement.. $115 spent on dining out in the last month (5/19 - 6/18).. That sucks. For the first time in my life I bought a few XLarge shirts.. Never have I done that. Might sound funny to some of you, but i've just always been a large, so to increase that normal thing for me is hard to swallow.

I've wanted to get into working out right after work since that seems to be the only time i'd have 30-60 minutes to do it.. But, I haven't done it yet. I've wanted to pick up the P90X program from my buddy.. But haven't done it yet. I suck.

I'm committing to change. I will swing by my buddies place and get the P90X program. I will start it on Monday. I will cut out fast food from my lunches.

Hey Mudflap, I've been doing this fitness bootcamp thing for the last month or so. I go MWF from 6:30 to 8:00, but you can really go any days between M-F at the same time, and then Saturday at 9:00 a.m. It's tough, but it's a good tough. It helps me to have someone pushing me because otherwise I find a way to slack off.

I didn't lose any weight, but in 4 weeks I become a lot stronger and it cut a minute off of my mile time. I don't have much weight to lose, but some of the people that do have lost 40+ lbs in 3-4 months.

It's not that expensive. Hit me up if you're interested---or anyone else really. the more people that sign up at once, the better deal the pricing becomes.

I stepped on the scale tonight and was shocked. I knew I had put on a few pounds since getting out of the military but 225.8lbs is ridicules. This has got to change. I start right now. Goal is 210, my military weight. I will be here a lot because I need the motivation now that I don't have the guys to work out with.

picked up some cheap p90x discs tonight, start in the morning. :ugh:

I hope it kills! For a long time I worked outside, but for the last few years I have basically been sitting or standing for work, not a lot of activity... and eating the same. That translates into a lot of weight gain. Bathroom scale said 203!!! this morning. I should be at maybe... 180 or so?

Will post progress. ;)

Taco.. how is your progress going.. I have gone from 215 at the beginning of September to 198 as of today with the really insane amount of stress diet.. I am now back to the gym as of tonight.. ran 4.45 miles in 50 minutes and burnt more calories than I have eaten all day... I am trying to look at this as a silver lining HEHE..

When I started following this thread I was up to 220lbs (6'2"). As of a few months ago when I last checked I was at 183 and I feel freaking awesome.

I cut out all of the unnecessary snacking and all soda and really focused on avoiding most things with HFCS and honestly that's really how I lost most of it. I guess I still have a decent metabolism too.

We did start a workout regiment that lasted about 4 weeks earlier this summer and I was feeling even better then. Might have to start back up.

Despite all my bad habits, twice in the last 6 months I've had blood work show cholesterol and such in normal ranges, even if my blood pressure is a little high. I'm having a total knee replacement next month and really need to get my act together even if my blood work is fine and even a recent stress induced EKG showed me in good health. I really need to get down from the 300# I've been hovering at. I joke plenty about being "Gravititionally Enhanced", but its someone else's turn to hold things down...

One of the things I missed after moving was have work time to go to the gym three times a week. I mostly just took that time to run or get on an eliptical. I still was not in great shape though. After moving it took me a couple months to get motivated and I was not happy being over 200 pounds. I have since been running 2-3 times a week and doing kettlebell exercises 2-3 times a week. I am down to 190 with a goal of 180. I have not been on a crazy diet and am just doing a better job of watching what I eat. I am in better shape now doing my own thing because I found something I can do at home and does not take a long time to do. I hate running though and only do it because it is part of our test.

The biggest thing is finding something you enjoy doing so that you will stick with it.

Thought I'd look at this thread again. I remember that goal of 180. Crazy thing is I am almost down to 160! That would be 45 lbs. I have also lowered my colesterol 80 points and my blood pressure has dropped. I feel great and look forward to blowing away th AF PT test in two weeks. I always just passed it but not now.

How are some of you doing?

Dredging this back up.

So, I'm 10 days off of soda - mainly Diet Coke. McD's killed me with their $1 any soda promo. I'd have to go get numerous drinks simply because they were $1. I had to end it cold turkey. I've noticed that I don't get tired in the afternoon and I have energy well into the evening versus when I was drinking lots of soda. The other big change, I dusted off my brand new yet 3y/o running shoes and took Shadow out for a 3mi walk/jog on Saturday. My goal is to make this a regular thing, 3-4 times a week.

I'm down 31 pounds since Jan 1. I switched to coke zero from regular, and adjusted my eating habits, but not much else. Things seem to be working.

I've lost ~20 pounds in the past month. About 15 of that in three days. Secret to losing weight fast? Have your wife tell you that she's leaving you. But hey, I'd been trying to get back below 200 for awhile!
