RME Weight loss Challenge

I am no weight loss guru, but I have studied up and tried a few things that have worked for me. When I was trying to lower my body fat %, I ate the same macros Beerman suggested 60% Protein, 20% Carbs, and 20% non-saturated fats(Use extra virgin olive oil for cooking eggs, chicken etc...).

I also make sure I eat a healthy snack every 3 hours, like no fat yogurt, no fat cottage cheese, low fat triscuits etc... By eating every three hours, your body doesn't store your food as fat to use for energy storage. Your body will use your frequent meals for energy, and then use the your fat stores when needed for energy. Most people think that eating less frequently with fewer calories will help them lose weight. Eating less frequently with fewer calories usually does the opposite by storing the food you do eat as fat.

The easiest way I have found to manage my eating is by determining how many calories my body needs per day, and then divide that number by how many meals I will need to eat to reach my goal. For example, if I am going to eat 2000 calories per day, and I plan to eat every three hours starting at 7:00am, I will need to eat around 5 meals per day. Divide your 2000 calories by meals per day(5), and you get 400 calories needed per meal. Here is a link to a calorie calculator.http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/issa64.htm Scroll down about 3/4 of the page to find the caclulator

If your inclined, try the 5 small meals/snacks a day for 3-weeks and see if it works for you. Re-evaluate your progress after that time period to determine if you are losing weight to quickly because of too few calories, or if you are gaining weight because of too many calories.

I've been doing the smaller, more frequent meals, combined with a lot of water. I haven't actually hit a scale or anything, but I feel better with the smaller meals and a lot less fat each day. Everything I've read says to do this as well, so I think that it'd help a lot of people with losing weight on here. I need to figure out some different choices of food to bring from home. Right now I've been doing hard boiled eggs, tuna packs, sometimes cheese. Maybe time for some low fat Triscuits for fibre!

Oh, and don't eat breakfast sausage links, I looked those up over the weekend, holy badness.

hmm, I'll play. I'm kind of stuck at one spot, and I started thinking that maybe I've done something similar to beerman in that I've cut my food down to the point where my body isn't able to do anything with it? I weighed 204 in January, and was as low as 182 a month or two ago, but that only lasted a couple days for some reason. I seem to hang out right at 188.

H: 6'2''
W: 188
Goal: 175-180

95% of what I drink is water, iced tea (no sweetener of course), and beer with maybe 2 energy drinks per month. I eat almost zero candy or sweets.

I usually eat either a bowl of cereal (cheerios), eggwhite omelette, or 2 fruit/yogurt parfaits from McDonalds.....3 days a week it's a 6 inch turkey subway with double meat, and the other days usually some sort of chicken or fish tacos. Dinner is usually low sodium healthy request soup and maybe some tuna...or something similar. I usually give myself 1 unhealthy breakfast, 1 bad lunch, and one bad dinner per week but not necessariliy on the same days. Is that counterproductive?

I stay pretty active (run 5-10 miles per week, hike, play basketball etc) but I think my vice is that I have bad sleeping habbits, and I tend to drink too much beer. It's not that I drink heavily so much as I drink often. I'll have 2-5 beers 4-6 days per week (that sounds bad lol). Even when I ramp up my running I don't seem to get any lower. when I dropped to 182 I was 6 days into a 10 day stint of not drinking, but I have a hard time believing that 6 days was all it would take for me to shed of 6 pounds just from drinking. I personally think it was because my AC was out in my car and I was sweating more.

So, is the next step getting more scientific about what I eat and when, or do I actually have to cut down on my beer intake?

Cutting out the beer did absolutely nothing for me....so keep on drinking it! I put away a 12 pack for each day of the weekend (fri, sat, sun) and was still just as fat as before.

I tried only drinking on the weekends, and even then no more than 6. Granted I felt a ton better but didn't lose/gain anything. But I drink natty, so that's pretty much water anyway.

Actually I lied. It makes a slight difference. You lose water weight and bloat. Which in turns make you feel a lot thinner. That is almost enough of a reason...except the fact that it is soooo good.

Here is an article about beer and weight training/conditioning. Take from it what you will. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/swordchucks3.htm
It is hard for some people stay on a diet or eating plan if they don't get at least on cheat meal/cheat day per week. Just make sure not to go overboard and negate the entire weeks progress during that cheat meal/cheat day. I personally found it harder to incorporate cheat meals into my diet, because they usually left me wanting more junk food.

Try and set a goal of 2-weeks eating only healthy food. Once you reach that goal, set a slightly longer goal. The longer I went without junk food, the easier the healthy eating became. I went from January 1st 2007 through October 2007 without soda, cake, fast food, junk food etc. But once I became a little lax on my eating plan, it became harder to stick to a strict diet.

Eat frequently so you don't feel hungry. Buy some protein powder that you can mix with fruit and ice, or peanut butter and make it into a great tasting shake for a pick me up. If anybody is interested in excellent protein powder(Nitrean), here is a link to some of the best I have ever tasted. http://atlargenutrition.com/nutrition.php I have never tried the strawberry, but I have been using the chocolate, and vanilla for over a year. The price might seem kind of high, but if you consider that it costs less than a soda, it isn't so bad. I think if you are really serious about losing a few more pounds, you might want to consider becoming a little more scientific about your eating habits. I was never large by any means, but following a fairly strict diet, I went from 17% body fat to 11% body fat in 3 months. As mentioned previously, I have a spreadsheet calculator that helps breakdown your macros for the day. It was very helpful for me when I first started. I would be happy to send it to anybody is interested in it.

Why you should stick with beer debate.

The reason not to drink hard alcohol......
On another note, vodka + sugar free redbull + low carb cranberry is the BBer's way to drink.

Seriously. KSL. I just bought my 11 year old a great bike for $35. It's not new, but is still very functional and has a lot of life left in it. I need to get some grips for it.

I'm in:

Age: 27
Height 6' 0”
Current weight: 250 LBS on 09/23/2008
Goal Weight: to have to buy 34" waist pants and drop at least 20 lbs. Hoping my knees thank me cuz they're getting kinda pissed of late.

I have cut out soda except for one can of Coke per day. (I'm actually getting to where I don't like soda :D) I'd bet I've dropped about 10 fat lbs, but have put a little more on from riding the bike ("good weight", I guess).

I'm gonna hit the treadmill every night for a month (it's what I have time for nowadays) and see where that gets me. I'll start when i get back from Moab, Oct. 5.

I'll have to buy a scale. I broke our last one the other day.

27 my a$$

Well good luck all. If anyone needs any help or advise just give me a PM.

I also started a blog, its in my sig. It has a bit of info and links to sites that helped me.

I am free, but if I help enough people maybe someone can renew my membership status. I hate getting those ads!

Either way, I hope you all have success. I feel like a new person and I love the new me. I will be at the gym today in case any of you are. I go to the 24 hour fitness on 1300 east 104th south. (Next to Smiths). I will be there from about 5-6:30 or so. Just look for the bald guy in the adidas shorts. I am a lot friendlier than I look I promise!:D

Hey...I'm there from 6:40 to 7:30 each morning. Maybe I'll start coming earlier (LOL) I used to go from 5:30 to 6:30, but now I go later. Cuz I can.

I weiged in last week.. but I made a mistake. I weighed in after a workout. I was pretty much sweat-soaked, and I hidrate 32 oz during my workout. I still weighed in at 5 pounds down... an even 300. Three weeks in, I figure I had a pound of extra liquid on me, so I'm pretty close to the two pounds per week thing. I'm actually planning on weighing in again tomorrow before the workout. If I remember.

Well I am in...

6'4" 220 Lbs

Goal 205

I started working out Monday of this week with a simple Cardio and Calisthenics routine. I am not so much worried about weight loss as I am just getting back into some semblance of shape. years back I used to Backpack constantly and I know I can't do that anymore and would like to get back into being able to backpack once and a while.

I started using FitDay.com and I was surprised at how poorly I eat... and I try not too eat too much junk food and such but my carbs were way the hell up there. like 250% of the RDA AWW while my protein was almost nill. So I have switched to Coffee instead of Mt Dew and that makes a difference. I also have motivation from my wife who loves to run and has ran a few 1/2 marathons a bunch of 10K's and a few 5K's in the last year.. she is also doing the FitDay thing so we are working together :)...

Well with my crappy diet, del taco, and beer...I've managed to get under 200 for the time in 5-6 years; 198.5.

I am sure that was a fluke and I'll be back up 205 after the gym today.

I'll even bite:

I'm the skinny dude
Age: 24
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 150 lbs
Goal Weight: 160-165 lbs of lean muscle

I've been trying to gain some more muscle mass, and have been going to the gym with my wife 2 times a week starting this month. Mostly doing cardio, but I'd like to get back to lifting: like I did in wrestling and speed and endurance training for tennis like in High School.

but I really think dropping the soda and french frees would be great and replacing those empty, fill me up, calories with good calories from healthy carbs and proteins.

I know it's a different goal but if anybody has any pointers on gaining some more lean muscle mass I'd appreciate it.

In the past all that happens when I do cardio is I drop 5 pounds then gain it back in muscle and as soon as I quit working out that 5 pounds of muscle atrophies back to whatever it was before.

I think we could all make a common goal of dropping the soda and have it be on the honor system, then after a certain amount of time, rewarding ourselves with a group wheeling trip: what do you guys think?

Well, three weeks without soda and fries (I started a week before this ^ post) and I feel great!

I even have cut out the potato chips and ice cream.

I marked a starting point for weights and even though prepping for Moab next week is throwing me off, I'm still getting to the gym 3 days a week minimum.

I ran 2.6 miles to get a starting point and see what I can improve on and averaged an 8:15 min mile and 12min 1.5 mile (over the course of 2.6 miles)
so I definitely have a lot of room for improvement

Ok, ok. Stratton was talking to me about this yesterday at lunch. I think he was trying to tell me that I'm fat. I've been wanting to get in shape for awhile now, but just haven't found the motivation. I guess this is where I'll find it. Here's the lowdown:

Age: 26
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 235
Goal Weight: 205

I think I really realized how bad it's gotten when I went and played basketball with my little bro the other day. He plays college ball for Westminster, so he's in really good shape. I played high school ball and used to be able to dunk it easily with two hands. Definitely can't do that anymore. My goal isn't to dunk a ball again, but to at least get that feeling of being in shape back. It would be nice to go snowboarding and not lose my breath strapping myself in. Snowboarding this year is my motivation, so I hope to get in shape for that.

http://www.military.com/military-fitness/workouts/try-pushup-push-workout

I was doing this for a couple of weeks and noticed some major changes. I'm going to have to start that back up again.

Anyone else want to join in with me? Here's a couple of cool websites:

http://www.pushupslogger.com/
http://www.hundredpushups.com/

Anyone down for throwing some money in a pot to see who the first one to get to 100 push ups is? I'd be willing to throw in a $20. Think... If we got 10 people to participate that's $200 for the winner. That means that when I win I can get me some sliders for the XJ.

well I weighed in last night... I have lost only 3 lbs... I think having the GF home recovering from knee surgery has hampered my efforts due to we have been eating out more often and its been big meals... but on a liter note I gave up my sausage biscuit from Mcd's every morning for a red delicious apple! and I do feel better during the day!

BTW GF is back to work as of yesterday so I'll where that gets me!!
