Have any of you had to mount a roof rack onto a roof w/ no options for a roof mounted anything from the factory? We're talking bolts through the roof....how have you done it? Did you like how it turned out?

What vehicle is this on? I know there are some magnetic mounts that are fairly strong.

What vehicle, I know that both Thule and Yakima make feet for a lot of vehicles. I had a friend mount a Yakima bike rake on the trunk of a Miata.

My friend did bolt a rack to the fiberglass roof of his bronco, not sure how he did it but he didn't have any issues. Of course I never saw anything on the rack ever.

Also they make artificial rain gutter mounts. I ran a set of these on a hard tonneau cover on a pick-up I ran them flat, they held a lot of bikes just fine.

Tyler, call Rack n Road in Salt Lake. They are more than helpful and will give you all kinds of suggestions. I have bought a lot of stuff from them over the years

I bolted a rack to the fiberglass top of my 4Runner. I used giant fender washers top and bottom and silicon sealant between them, it worked great. I've also bolted the artificial rain gutter through my soft top, it worked ok too. I wouldn't do that to sheet metal, though, I'd look for a set of those Thule or Yakima feet that temporarily attach through the door seal, or I'd see about installing factory-style rails.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm looking at something that will be permanent. And something that can hold a substantial amount of weight. Maybe RTT w/ people in it kind of weight. I'll try Rack and Road to see what they suggest. the Fender Washers w/ bolts are what I was thinking...

any more suggestions?

We are still waiting to know which vehicle this is going on.

Permanent rails will distribute weight better than fender washers. If you're not just throwing backpacks and camp chairs up there, I'd have Rack and Road or somebody give you a more professional solution?

The biggest problem is when you put over 100lbs or more on the roof. It will start to bow and cave in on most any car/van today. You need to make sure it's supported enough before you even dream of putting something like a RTT on top.
Just a thought for you look at.

They make gutterless mounts, and universal rails that spread the load.

Or go buy factory rails and use nutserts (like factory) to mount it.

I think I have everything for a 4runner here somewhere.

Maybe I'll go look for some factory rails at pick a part and install them. It's going onto a '92 4runner. Chevycrew, if I can't find what I need I'll give you a heads up and see about possibly trying yours.

Thanks guys!
