My good friend Dayne from my AK days just finished flight school last week... He texted me at about 4:40pm right before this crash on the 12th.. He called me at 5:38pm but I missed his call. :(

LAST WEEK'S EVENT

BEAVER, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Investigators say a plane crash near the Beaver Airport in Beaver County was caused by pilot error.

It happened around 5 p.m. on Thursday evening. The pilot, Dayn Jenkins of Salt Lake, and two other passengers were hurt in the crash. Chris Cooper from Oklahoma was one of the passengers. He called 911. That tape was released to ABC4.

Dispatcher: “Anybody injured?”
Cooper: “Yes...two, three, I'm not sure what happened to my head.”
Dispatcher: “You're one of them?”
Cooper: “Yes.”

Cooper told the dispatcher where the plane ended up. Screaming and moaning can be heard during the 911 call.

Cooper: “We're in a field directly south of the airport (screaming and moaning)… maybe a mile… Oh! (more screaming).”

The sheriff’s office said that the other injured man is Kurt Jenkins, the father of the pilot. Cooper told the dispatcher that the older man might have had back injuries.

Cooper: “We're not sure if this guy broke his back.”

Beaver County Sheriff Cameron Noel said that the pilot got in trouble when he took off the wrong way after a fuel stop.

“They had a pretty strong tailwind, he realized that,” said Sheriff Noel. Sheriff Noel also said it caused the plane to head straight for a mountain.

“As it was pulling up, so it wouldn't go into the side of the mountain, it stalled and they crashed,” said Sheriff Noel.

All three men were injured but none of the injuries were life threatening according to police.

“They're lucky, they're real lucky,” said Sheriff Noel. The sheriff said he has investigated two other plane crashes at the same airport where no one survived.

The pilot and passenger, Chris Cooper, were treated and released with minor injuries. Kurt Jenkins, the father of the pilot, was air lifted to the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray where he was listed in critical condition with back injuries on Friday.

So, are you saying that he called you after the crash happened?

Not very often that a plane crash ends with only injuries, hope it all turns out OK.

That sucks if so... I was in a really bad head on collision (18 year old hit me head on doing 70) I was trapped in my car and the only thing that kept me sane, was that I called my best friend and talked to him until help arrived.

To take off downwind is a pretty big mistake and it sounds like the winds were really blowing. Sorry to hear that.

Is this why we haven't seen you around on here lately? I was wondering if you were still around....

Exactly  ... He said he'd call me today or tomorrow to fill me in. Also mentioned that his dad isn't doing too well.

Those guys were visiting the rig I'm working on outside of Beaver.

Small world for sure

That's nuts.. Good thinking to stay sane though

No, that happened in like September 01? I've just been real busy up here. The last 6-8 months my sales have gone up incredibly high and I've been building 10-15 crate axles a month, plus everything else on top of it.

I spend a lot of time around pilots when I have days off and accidents happen to even the best pilots. We had a guy at Hinckley get slammed with a ground loop in another guys freshly restored piper pacer (17 hours on new motor, prop, and fabric/paint). This guy has thousands of hours of flight time and the plane just got away from him on landing. He walked away and ended up near totaling the plane.

I hope your buddy and his friends end up ok after this is all said and done.
