Nope, still just means the height of the tire, not the width. So, no good thing here, we still have to cover the whole width of the tire. :(


From my understanding it is the whole with of the tread, not the tire, atleast that's what the inspection stations have told me.

I too got the flappage fine in December on my F250. No fix-it-ticket, just a simple pay da man ticket. I think the recent crackdown is 100% due to budget shortfalls.

I'm sure this will ruffle a lot of feathers but...... The law is full of flaws, and needs to be changed. I get a ticket for changing tire size an inch, but 2" of body lift (if I keep the stock tire) is legal??

All I know is under the old law my Jeep would be legal.

Under the old law my tow rig would be legal.

Under the new law, both are illegal. So, where is this great improvement?

you laugh, some people i know are registering their cars and trucks in tooele so they can pass emissions inspection.

think about it, you have a stock rubicon jeep equipped with a 245/75/16. you then upgrade to a 255/70/16 (essentially the same size) and you are now required to buy mudflaps. Nothing has changed other than what is molded into the sidewall.


I feel safer already

you can always move to Evanston Wyoming where there is no safety or emissions.... its only a 80 min drive each way... lol

that's not a bad idea, but is wyoming a state? I don't think I could handle anything smaller than salt lake right now.....


If I were to move now, it will be to vegas or back to texas.

This is hope and change, Utah-style.

I have to restate my objection to using police as de-facto revenue collectors. It's underhanded, and I don't care if "it's the law". The increased emphasis on generating revenue-intensive tickets irritates the hell out of me.

What bugs me is there is a truck driving on 44's lifted so high the top of the tire is at frame hieght. He has had it like that for over 2 years with no ticket (driven every day from Lehi to SLC) I put larger tires on my TJ and got a ticket going from the shop to the house.

I have lived their and learned, I couldnt wait to get back to Utah, Now Utah is trying to be like California. I belive Wyoming is the next frontier

Recently my truck failed inspection because my frame was 25" off the ground which is 1" too high for it weight class. So I read the rules online and it says if the door tag is missing or removed then the vehicle is considered to be 4500-7499lb weight class which allows me to have a frame hieght of 26". You wouldn't believe how easy it was to remove the door plate from a 25 year old truck.

says right there on lifted vehicles mud flaps must be present and cover the full width of the tire and the upper 50%.

As crappy as it is, I guess running 285's instead of 265's would fall into that category since the UHP doesn't discriminate between lift from tires and lift from suspension.

Jsudar, I recommend you read the rules this time. On page 19 is specifically states that fender flares must cover the tread of the tire.

Mud flaps must be as wide as the tire.

The rules are different for mud flaps and fender flares.

I also recommend you use a 2009-2010 copy of th Safety Manual instead of that old copy you have posted. Here's the link if you missed it.

Really? What part of Cali? I lived in NorCal for 2 years and I couldn't believe what guys could get away with up there! Lift laws seemed non-existant!

Drove down to alpine today (dont ask). I couldn't help but notice all the dubs on soccer moms SUVs and 4 doors with aftermarket +1 tires/wheels that, by law are required to have mudflaps:rolleyes:


Funny thing is, Utah is the first state I've lived in/visited that allows triples. A geneva truck pulling three trailers going 70 mph down I-15, not an issue. 20mm of extra tire, BUST EM'!!!

FWIW, here is a post from 2004 stating exactly what I said, this law has been in affect since the new lift laws were changed back in 2001. It's just dumb that they are really starting to crack down on it now, but haven't for the last 8 years. I wonder if you could fight something like that? Kind of like if company doesn't actively protect their copywrights they loose their right to at a later time. :p

Are you referring to the suspension law or the mup flap law?

Whats specifically illegal with your Jeep? Whats specifically illegal with your tow rig?

Suspension:
I personally think the new law is 10 times better than the older, for every CJ/TJ/FJ/XJ (shorter wheelbase than ~100") you get twice (or more) of legal lift. With the old lift a CJ5 could have ~2" of lift, with the new law they can be sprung over on 35's if setup with the law (frame height) in mind.

Mudflap:
I'm not sure what changed and when it happened, but to my knowledge it didn't have anything to do with the suspension law that U4WDA helped introduced. Even if it did the old suspension really sucked and I'll live with fender flares and mud flaps long before I'm content with a 2.5" lift on my FJ40.

exactly!

enforcement of the law is up to the officer. We could definitely be in trouble if you get pulled over by one, and his daughter lost her virginity in a jeep the week before:D

According to Brett's post that I linked to, it was a compromise that came with the lift laws. I agree, mud flaps and flares are easy to remedy.
