I have a code reader that will read the code and can reset the computer to turn off the light. Let me know if you want to use it. I,ll be home the rest of the week.

Not to high-jack the thread but I have Safety Inspection related question...

Does anyone know if your safety inspection has to be in the county you reside in? Can you get a safety inspection in Cache County and register in Davis...for example.

It will fail emissions but not inspection. On OBD2 vehicles they don't use the tail pipe sniffer but they rather plug into the diag port and read the codes. If there are any it fails.

Emissions yes because the reqs are different for the 4 counties in which it is required. (and it isn't required in the rest) Safety OTOH is the same statewide so I don't see it being a problem but it could arouse some suspicion. (and it may not be legal-I'm not sure)

You can get safety done anywhere, I had a vehicle for a short while that was registered in Cache county and I got inspection done in Utah county. Typically students that change apartments frequently would rather leave the car registered wherever their parents live just to avoid the hassle of registration forms getting lost.

It's the same code that keeps getting thrown. It's something to do with the EVAP system.. Has something to do with the Germans getting this model ready for US specs.. I dunno.. it's annoying as hell really. The shop that's checked it numerous times just clears the code whenever we go in..

From what I can tell, Audis are known to have the dash lit up like a christmas tree... Still, irritating.

I'll be meeting up with Dom in a n hour or so to clear the codes, then i'll run over to get it inspected.

As far as the safety test in different counties ~ My Samurai was always registered out of the wasatch front so that I could avoid I/M. It was registered in Washington County, and whatever county has Kamas/Woodland in it.. I was only asked once by an LEO why my car was registered out of SLC area, yet i lived in Sugarhouse.. Easy answer.. I'm going to school in SLC. Lie, but believable.

Thanks guys

The 'Quick Stop' IM place by me wouldn't touch a lady's car this summer simply because it had a CEL light on. She was pissed, and made a scene, so as I was waiting I was privy to the drama.

If you clear the codes don't drive past 55 until you get it checked. IIRC, on some cars (such as my bro's old Ranger) that is when they kick on and will throw codes.

So i'm told by a somewhat trusted mechanic that even if we reset the codes, they won't allow the I/M testing to be done. He said that it takes a few days for the computer in the vehicle to check and evaluate all the systems, and until those are all ready to be tested, the I/M shops can't even do the test, resulting in a FAIL..

Is this true??!

This is true, it shows its been reset and the vehicle has to be ran through a specified amount of time for the computer to get all reports fresh from all systems

Thought so...

Hey, do you know much about the EVAP system that keeps sending off codes? I've bene told that it's a major contributer to codes and warning lights..

Like the others posted it is true. Each car goes thorugh specific readiness tests for the emissions part. Tests include o2 sensor, o2 heater, cat converter, evap, etc etc. Depending on what year your car is it can have a certain amount of not readies. Meaning it hasn't gone through the parameters for that test yet. 2000 and down can have 2 not readies. 2001 and up can only have one. Evap and cat are usually the last ones to get tested, so you might be able to sqeak it in right after the others get tested before it pops the check engine light. I can usually drive a car and get it ready in a normal commute no probelm, some cars only take 20 minutes to run through enough tests to get them e/i 'd. Depends on the car and the parameters of the test.

you will not fail inspection for that, you will probably fail OBD testing though (emissions) I assume it is a newer car? So it is OBD II? IF it is OBD II it will fail guaranteed. Sometimes with older cars, they will still pass, since they are OBD I;)

Yes, it will take a couple days for the codes to read out. If you go to do the test, without waiting a couple days it will either come up as 'Not Ready' or 'Failed'

My brother had to go through the same thing on his Jetta (obviously, very very similar to an Audi). I can ask him to make sure but I remember his only taking a couple hours to fully test systems.
