87 suzuki samurai, 1.3, motor stock except weber carb, had a dead battery a few weeks ago, jumped it, no problems till a few days ago. Then battery would not stay charged, battery and alternator both tested good. No obvious breaks in wire...any ideas?

Hmm... Ok, here is a rundown of problems that I have had and how I fixed them, granted I swaped in the GM Alternator right after I got mine, but these might give you an idea:
Not enough water in battery. In cold weather especially, this will kill your battery.
The pigtails on the alternator are not contacting properly. I fixed this by making my own pigtail with wire conectors and bending them to fit really tight.
Bad connector on the back of alternator. Don't know what it is actually called, but its where the battery connects to the alternator, I had one loosen up on me from the inside of the alternator. Had to replace the whole thing.
Bad wires. This is obvious, but I check and change mine pretty regularly because I have bad luck.
To much draw on the stock alternator. If you have an aftermarket stereo, this will kill everything. This is one reason why I swaped the GM on is.
Belt slipping. Have you checked to see if the belt is on there tight? If the pully can spin when everything is supposedly 'tight', then its probably not turning the alternator enough to charge anything.
Hope those help.

Its possible. What kind of belt is it, toothed or solid? I've always had more luck with the solid ones. If it is cracked or shiney then you should probably replace it. Then I like to tighten the belt tight enough that the pully cannot spin by hand. Whatever you do, don't use that belt dressing sh!t! It just makes the belt slippery so it wont squeek anymore, but it makes the belt slippery, which is bad.

I hope it helps, its all pretty simple stuff. My recomendation is to swap in a GM Alternator, makes alot of difference!
BTW, your Sami looks just like mine. Copy Cat! ;-)

Thats my old one, sold it, Now I have a white softop with the rear fenders cut out, front fenders trimmed, 4" spring under, 4.16 case, same tires (tsl sx), about to drop 4.62's in and throw 33's on it, and toying with the idea of a FI 1.6. We have a suzuki club, you should come wheel with us, we're gonna hit rattlesnake and play in the snow on saturday.

Love to, but the shackles of gaining a college education have kept me from keeping mine in good running order, so it's sitting in the side yard of my parents house right now (it makes me very sad). I'm getting an EFI 1.3 to swap in it and have a myriad of half finished projects and parts that will finally be put together this summer after years and years of planning and plotting.

Just do a parasitic load test. Pretty much use a meter or whatever to see how much amps are getting drawn with the car off. Then start pulling fuses until the draw goes away then see what the fuse powers and go further and further

i second that!! use a multi tester and try to find where it's grounding out. most likely the problem if not the belt. if it was the belt it wouldn't drain the battery it just wouldn't charge it. if the battery is good it would be able to last a decent amount of time even with the headlights and radio on. i would put my money on a wire grinding out, so i agree with the what wj zuk... see ya saturday!! i'll call ya.

he gave the magic words... IT SQUEEKES ALOT which is a belt related thing... so I would be willing to bet that the belt is very loose and it hasn't been charging for some time and finally the battery just went dead... I take it you charged the battery to test it... seeing the only true way to test a battery is once it is fully charged up. If you have a multimeter you can check the voltage at the battery and see if its fully charging or just getting by... and then if the belt is tight then you can start checking for that draining effect on the battery...

If a vehicle loses all electrical functions, check for a burned fusible link. This incident may be caused by a shorted alternator lead wire. Inspect the white/yellow wire at the wire tie, located below the intake manifold/carburetor, near the EGR valve. (See illustration.)

Repair the wire as necessary, exercising caution to insulate and secure the wire within the wire tie.
