San Diego was pretty sweet.

So the big, super-awesome trip to Bermuda to enjoy all that the Fairmont Hotel had to offer did not happen. We were flying standby and as luck would have it, all the flights available to get us there were FULL. Not the usual "going to be close" but absolutely full, with like 30 people on standby. Ridiculous.

I should mention that I was pretty happy about that, because, while Bermudan highlife sounds faaaaaantastic, I hate flying over water, and islands, so I was not into that trip very much. That, and staying at a $500/night hotel kind of freaked me out, so I was all smiles. :D

Bermuda was out, but we needed to go somewhere. Our choices on 12hr notice were: Seattle (my first choice, never been), Long Beach, Vegas, or San Diego. I got outvoted on Seattle, Long Beach is close to LA, and Vegas is a known quantity, so San Diego it was.

San Diego is nice! It's smallish, but big enough. Everything is close to the ocean on the freeways, and the traffic isn't too bad... In And Out Burgers are freakin' tasty as heck, though the fries SUCK ASS, do not get them. "Little Italy" is fake, as in, it's a marketing ploy, but the restaurants were actually pretty decent. Balboa Park is GREAT-- museums galore, nice architecture, free public trams to ferry you around, etc.
The best part though, is the beach. I was stoked to finally get to the actual West Coast and dip a toe. We went to Silver Strand, and the waves were mellow (to my dismay, I want big waves damnit and right NOW), the beach was warm, and all was well. Mission Beach was pretty sweet, kind of a touristy/surfer vibe there, and the kids dug the amusement park. Unfortunately, they were both too small to ride the roller coaster, so that kind of sucked. I have decided that I am going to have to start surfing, since we're only a 1.5hr flight away.

Anyway, I liked San Diego just fine. Nothing like what I was thinking... the architecture was more... Hispanic, and the abundance of palm trees was odd. In fact, all the vegetation seems to be more... vertical, or something, like it grows up more than out, or something. The fig trees are great... and the city is very different than the eastern-style cities I'm used to in the intermountain west. It seems that San Diego lacks the industrial-core model, and seems instead to have grown first, then had industry come in. First impressions, anyway.

Go visit, hang out on the beach. :D

Ya, PB and MB are good times. Lots of eye candy and good drinking right on the board walk. I've rented cruisers and hung out on PB for quite a few days.

SD is kind of small? I guess in a 2.9 million (legal) people kind of way lol

Well, it felt small. :D Wow. Looking at a map, it's like SLC-- the city itself is not that big, but the metro area is ENORMOUS. LOL holy crap.

Nobody seemed to worked up out there, maybe it was just me, projecting my laid-back vibe LOL

It is a nice place. Great food and perfect weather most of the year and my kids got a nice sense of history on the Midway Tour and several other historic ships on the board walk last trip.

Seems to be the hot spot around here-- on the flight back there was a nice young couple returning from their honeymoon.

Bart, did your kid fly JetBlue? :D

I was there around this time last year. Stayed at a place called The Dana, right on Mission Bay. VERY nice motel!

We flew into LAX, which is one huge joke of an airport. Returned to SLC via John Wayne airport. Showed up 2 hours early, but got through the security check in about 6 minutes. Nothing left to do for the next two hours but sit in the bar. I was getting worried they may not let us board the plane in the condition we were in, but we got on just fine.

In the future, I'll use John Wayne Intl. only, and skip that whole LAX mess.

While in the Navy, lived in Sandyeggo for the mid 80s. Loved it loved it loved it. Excellent for motorcycling everywhere. Beaches, PB, MP, OB... All of it, offroading in the East County desert, night life...

After 6 years split between Oregon, Florida and then Hawaii (miss Hawaii big time!!!), we returned to SD. OH MY! What happened to the place? It got HUGE!!!! Wow! Not near as friendly either. Maybe it was my uniform, or the stickers on my car. But SD is still a great place. Moved away in 98 and still can't believe how much bigger it has become.

Tacoma, you truly got to enjoy the best of SD. Persoanlly, for food, we love El Torito's and Anthony's Fish Grotto. Locations all over the metro SD area. And all the various 'Berto's (Roberto's, Aliberto's etc.) drivethru Mexican. Food...

I was born here behind the Zion curtain :D. I had moved away just to explore the western part of the country. So we moved to Seattle , loved it the first time we lived there, not so much the second time :ugh:. After we left Seattle the first time we moved to Oceanside, Ca. we loved it, loved the weather, loved the pay ($30 per hr Residential Construction), but hated the lack of the English language among the locals. When I think of all the places in Cali we have been, SD County is the nicest(lower crime, beautiful scenery, weather[I hate snow], lack of stronghold religion, Blue state[although I disagree with some of their beliefs], ect.). Anyone who goes to SD, if going with an open mind, you will love it.

BTW, I would live there, but I was out voted by the rest of the family. Instead I am stuck back here. :-\
