Sat For Too Long?

So I picked up a 85 Bronco that has been sitting for 6 years. Put some clean fuel in it and moved across the yard. The thing just won't run worth a shet. I'm sure the old fuel (not much at all in the tank) didn't help the way it ran, but.

The only way I can keep it running is to sit and continuously pump the throttle. It ran great when it was parked.

It's got a 302 EFI.

I checked the fuel filter and it looked good, full. The pump sounds like it is building up pressure and then shutting off.

Thoughts?

Change its name. ;)

sounds like everything is just dirtier than hell in there 5 years will gum anything up.. I would do the old Seafoam (or whatever miracle oil you like) in the Fuel and through the vacuum and see if that helps out.. hell just run it for a long time.. get out the old Ipod and jam away as you pump the gas :)

When I bought my scout it had been used as a goat house for 7 years but ran when parked. We couldn't get it to run so we tore the motor apart and the antifreeze had jelled up and expanded into everywhere.

I want to try the seafoam thing, Napa sell it?

I think so.. Autozone has it occasionally.. I know some people just use ATF through the Vac as well - (I have never done it myself).. but I have had decent results from the seafoam.. get the spray bottle if you can it is a lot easier to get in there without stalling everything out...
It won't clean the injectors though so you still need to do some serious fuel system treatment.. I have used acetone before with decent results but some people say I am crazy for doing it in the quantities that I did :)

Just for the heck of it before you change the oil add some ATF and run the thing at idle for say 10 minutes or so.. then drain it (really let it drain out).. this will clean out journals and such that can get gummed up after sitting for a long time.. (works great on old IH motors that haven't ran in decades)

Thanks for the input. Keep in mind, this thing has a hard time just idling. I hate to do it, but if the injectors are as clogged as I think they are I may have to remove them and have them cleaned. Unless, there is a better way??

SeaFoam!

I love SeaFoam and yes, NAPA does sell it. I also like Marvel Mystery Oil...but it's cheaper to use ATF.

I get the engine hot, pour the SeaFoam into a larger container like a red SOLO keg cup and pull the vacuum line off the booster or pcv-any line that will feed the entire intake and does not go through any restrictors or check valves.

With the cup of SeaFoam in one hand and your other hand revving the engine from the TB slowly slurp out the SeaFoam with the vacuum line, the engine will want to die but keep it running by varying the amount of cleaner being ingested and adjusting the throttle. Once the engine has consumed a decent amount of cleaner-say 1/2 bottle you should start to see white smoke from the exhaust. When this happens I start to really load up the engine with cleaner until it dies---Don't hydrolock it but get enough in there that you feel there is unburned SeaFoam and fuel sitting on top of the pistons--

Let the engine sit for at least two hours, when you start it up you will enhance the effectivness of Holliday's mosquito abatement program.:D

You may need to do this several times but it has always worked for me!

I have also used a cocktail of ATF, Toulene and Acetone and this is also very effective but a little more difficult to obtain.

X2 on using ATF or MMO in the crankcase.

After the Sea Foam treatment, if you still have problems, you may want to check for propper fuel pressure and volume. If you need to borrow a pressure guage, call me. Wayne 801-661-3306

Thanks Wayne, I have looked for the tester connection but can't seem to find it. Besides the fuel rail is there another common location for these?

There should be a schrader valve on the fuel rail with a black cap on it. It is about the size of a valve stem.
