Scary transmission sounds

So this started a few days ago. Every once in a while, mostly at the shift from second to third, occasionally at the shift form first to second my jeep will make bad noises.
If the windows are rolled up, it will sounds like cross between an old school V belt squeek and a leaky straw that is sucking air with fuid (if that makes sense).
If the windows are down, it sounds like someone is trying to stretch a cat. Seriously... imagine trying to make a cat longer than it is.. the screeching sound that it would make? Yeah... like that, with a little metal on metal scraping thrown in for good fung shuei.

Once the sound starts, it dosn't go away till I stop the thing, and I mean a complete dead stop.
It seems to happen more often if I'm on the throttle and then let off suddenly... like if the nose dips as it shifts, I'm almost guaranteed to have the angry cat.

Is my transmission trying to tell me something? Is it trying to tell me that it's dying? Is this a potential easy fix? I haven't changed the fluid yet or anything , other than checked the level.

I'm also running a 249 with a dead as a doornail VC and no front driveshaft while I wait for time to swap in my 242.
Is there a chance that this could be T case related, or am I hoping against hope that my tranny isn't dying???

Thanks...

sounds like to me it is a stretched chain it the t case. or a bad bearing. i work at a damn good transmission shop that has been open since 1972. i would have to drive it but i have also seen a cracked drum in the trans do it to or a 100% worn out band but usually when its the band it shifts funny or no shift. um if you want you can call me at 8015996068 my name is zac....

Thanks for the offer Zac.

I was acting up last night when I drove it, and I noticed that the sound stays constant relative to vehicle speed, not RPM. I actually got it to shift from third back into second, and the sound remained constant until it shifted back into third and then went away. I think I'm going to do the T case swap and see if it stops. I'm hoping...

OK... T case swapped, and I'm still getting the sound.

I confirmed that the OD light doesn't flash on the dash...
I turned off OD, no change.
Shifted into second, and back into third, no change.
Shifted the T case into 4wd part time, no change.

I stuck my head out, and it sounded like front axle, but why would the front axle start screeching at a shift, when the t case was in 2WD???

I had this problem once... it was the throw out bearing... but when I pushed the clutch in it stopped making the noise... so kind of different from what your experiencing...

I'm having the exact same problem (in a NV3550), and also like gijohn, the nasty noise goes away once I depress the clutch, but as soon as I let it out and get on the throttle, the noise comes back....I'm almost positive it has to do with the rpm speed. As I give it more throttle it gets worse, but if I let up on the throttle it doesn't sound quite as bad. I'm going to take it into the shop today, will post diagnosis.

Almost guaranteed that you just have a bad throwout bearing. Aside from having to pull the trans, it is a very easy fix.
