School me on Dana 60 lockout hubs

Here's a question for ya, I have a 91 F350 Kingpin D60. The truck came stock with auto hubs and later the po converted it to manual MM hubs. Well one of them went bad and I was looking into replacements. Searching around I found that some places list that Warn hubs require a hub nut conversion kit for an additional $80  Any idea of what this is? Do I need it whereas I already have manual hubs?

Also I'm pretty sure I'll go with Warn (MM bring the suckyness!) is it worth the extra cash to go with premiums or will the black dials be fine? Thanks for any help,

Andrew

If you have the stock 30 spline outer stub shafts you can use any of the ttb dana 50 lockouts that are all over the place in the junk yards. Make sure it is not from a d44. I usually try to grab one off a newer truck, usually I find a 95-97. Some of them came with 3 tork bolts instead of 6 allen bolts but the lockout is the same it is just a different cap.

Unless you have the 35 spline outer stub shafts it is probably ok just to run the stock ones. super easy and cheap to carry a spare too...

(that thread also talks about what parts you can use on a d60 from a ttb d50)

I'm assuming the stock 30 spline outers?
What size tire/ motor/ gearing/ weight of the rig?

Good call. They are the stock 30 spl. And its under my 7.3 diesel, 4.10's, 255/85's (33x10.50) and weight wise it comes in at slightly less than an army tank :D Its in 4wd often, but it doesn't see anything hardcore just camping trips and snow.

Hey thanks for the help. I completely forgot about the D50 hub option :D

You'll be fine with the black dials, but...
If you watch the yards you'll occasionally find warn premiums on the TTB Dana 50's.
The yards charge the same for both.

A stock stub will usually go before the hub, so I'd run the crappiest hubs I can to avoid killing a stub on a crawler (which can mushroom and kill the spindle).
but for your truck it's not really a concern: I'd go with premiums because they are soo much nicer. You know when they are in and they don't jam as easily.

(the three bolt hubs are pos... btw avoid at all costs).

As far as I can figure out the lockout for the 3 bolt is the same as the 6 bolt it is just a different cap. My parts truck came with the 3 bolt ones, I broke an inner shaft and the hub held great, I smashed one on a rock and replaced both caps so they would match but my spare is a 3 bolt. Now I wouldn't be able to tell which lockout was from the 3 bolt or the 6 bolt since they have been pulled apart so many times. Other than smashing on a rock I have never heard of a cap failing. (I believe the previously mentioned pirate thread talks a little about that too)

I don't know about the idea of using a hub as a fuse (unless it is one that is designed to be used a fuse) When I broke a hub I twisted the splines on the 30 spline outer shaft. I think I ran it for the rest of the trip but still had to get a new stub. (of course I always ran my drive shafts as fuses on the bronco so what do I know...)

I used to use hubs as my fuse but that quickly changed after a good friend ended up rolling off the top of rock-pile because his right front hub gave out when he was more than half way up. That was a scary situation and a very hard roll over.

good point...

I think, thenag, you are confusing the ford 6 bolt hubs with Warn premiums. They are visibly different.

Alright let me clarify my statement;

I have used many different OEM hub locks and caps all from ford trucks. All of them from 90ish - to 96 ford f250 and f350's some from d50 ttb's and some from ball joint d60's. all with 30 spline stub shafts. They interchange so well I no longer know which ones are from which.

there are two different hub lock caps pictured, I have used both of those caps. I have interchanged those caps with the locking mechanism and have not seen or heard of any difference in the actual locking mechanism. The cap is different, it is also interchangeable, but that cap doesn't have anything to do with the actual mechanism that engages the shaft to the hub.

If you have a d60 axle with the oem 3 bolt cap, you can un-bolt those 3 bolts, and remove the cap, then you can bolt on a 6 bolt cap just by bolting it on. You do NOT have to swap the locking mechanism.

I have done this with hubs from a 96 d60, so I doubt that there are hubs out there that will only take the 3 bolt cap that were used in the last fey years of production. The locking mechanism seems to be identical.
