School me on Synthetic rope

I have been looking to replace my cable and go with synthetic and have found several different options.

Is there anything I should stay away from?
Is there anything to be looking for as for as quality?
Is there a preferred brand?
What size in Diameter and length should I be looking for? It will be going on my buggy.

And if any vendors out there want to send me a price on what they got, that would also be great.

Thanks

I got a great price on mine from Mt Logan. Call them at 435 752-4272
Mine is a viking and is 80' of 5/16" I think. It ended up being a little too long for my short drum winch on the buggy, but it was super easy to shorten.

I've used 5/16 Amsteel Blue on two (soon to be three) different rigs. Lots of places sell it. It fully rocks.

I still use my Amsteel Blue from Rockstomper about 6 years ago! It still works great, but I should probably replace it soon. It does fully rock.

Be careful searching for it. You will get a website made by WinchLine called Amsteel Blue, which is probably the right stuff but it seemed overpriced. Amsteel blue is used on freighter ships and many other places, don't get gouged on the price.

I think I have heard this before, but if the rope gets frayed, can you shorten it and weave the end back on? And if so how or who can do this?

When I called in they asked which website I was ordering from, I told them Amsteel, and then they gave the price I was expecting. Then I asked about what other sites they take orders for and they told me winchline, and their prices were like $50 more for the SAME THING... good advice

Sounds decent to me. Someone around here should really just buy a spool of the stuff and sell it off 100' at a time. Could be you... ;)

It is not that great of a price by the spool

$820.00 for 600'
http://www.amsteelblue.com/item.cfm?itemid=44882

EDIT: is this company the knockoff because in the ad it says
Amsteelblue.com is not affiliated with Samson® Rope Technologies, Inc.
Amsteelblue.com 2008 - Division of MASTER-PULL LLC

That's the one I was talking about in my previous post. They sell Amsteel Blue made by Samson, but at a higher cost.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
I saw these guys online and called them to ask about the rope and he said because they are back ordered about 2 weeks on the slimline fairleads he would give me free shipping on the fairlead and the rope.

I think I will be getting the 5/16 x 100 Hunter Green

From the chart Herzog put up, I think you're much better off with the 3 5/8 rope. With a break strength of over a million pounds, it sounds pretty safe.

Might just be a little heavy.

I am afraid I dont think I could get 100' on my spool. I dont think I could even get 1' on there.

So I did pay too much :-\

Well, the plus side is that your rope will be ready to go. If you buy from an industrial supplier, you might only get just the rope and you will have to braid the loop end in unless they are willing to do it for you. I just tie mine in a knot.
