5/16. You can get more of it on the spool, and if (when) it does break you can just splice it back together.

Now wouldn't it be wiser just to get 100 feet or whatever of 3/8 and not be waiting for it it break over 5/16? Or are you just stating that 5/16 is good for his weight and syn rope will fray through sometime on either 5/16 or 3/8 and to not waste the money;)

Good questions! I am ready to order just need to decide 3/8x100 or 5/16x125.

It only breaks through abrasion, as far as I've seen, and that's going to affect 3/8 of 5/16. I doubt you can fit 100 feet of 3/8 on an XD900i, too. That's just a hunch though. I'd stick with 5/16. Either way, learn how to splice it.

I have "heard" that if the rope slacks and then suddenly goes tight the "jerk" will break it too, and that sucks. Being able to rebraid it back together is very nice though :)

Nope, the XD900i will fit 100' of 3/8" just fine, as will an XD9000i. ;) We use 3/8" all the time--not so much for the strength (even though that's a bonus) but because it's available in all sorts of colors where the 5/16" only comes in blue.
