I know its awsome, thats it, what do I need, how does it work, other than a lower crawl ratio, whats it good for???????

For sake of argument, use a 96 XJ with a 4.0/AW4/231

If the 231 already has a tera 4:1 is there anything to gain?

Discuss, please....

With the 4.1, do you want lower? IF so, the easiest way for your application is a D300 stacked behind your 231. Or a klune V. I would think you are plenty low as you are though.

IMO, and others may disagree, I think doing much to the 231 is a waste. If you put forth the effort to double a case then you should atleast get twinsticks out of it :D

Benefits to a doubler:

gear selection-I can use 1:1, 2:1, and 4:1. If I pay the $1K to get a 3:1 gear set in my 203 I will be able to have 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 6:1. Sometimes its too much but having gear selection is nice for trail rigs. I can also do all these combos in fwd, rwd, and 4wd. Again, its about selection. None of the other cases, even the Atlas can do all this. They will have high and low, nothing in between.

cost-If I had just about any other case with 4:1 I would be into it atleast $1000. The doubler I am into the cost of the doubler kit (about $750) and with that I have 32 spline outputs, twinstick, all gear driven cases.

Downsides to a doubler:

overall size length-the thing is DAMN long no matter how you look at it. Also, with my rear case clocked so its flat it sits right up under my seat, literally and inch or two from the bottom of my seat. The setup is HUGE.

weight-the thing weighs close to a metric TON :D...if you try to lift this thing on your own you WILL get a hernia...;)

I dont really regret doing the doubler, but if I were to do it again I would prolly save up for a little longer and buy an Atlas or maybe in the future the new Stak case so you get all the benefits of a doubler in a single case :D

I had a 03/05 doubler in the cruiser and it was freakin heavy!!!!! Crawl ratio's were through the roof but I'm one to go the route of the 4:1 if it's in a cherokee. Especially if you've got the 4:1 and doubly especially if you've got an automatic transmission. With the torque multiplication factor from the torque converter and the 4:1 you wouldn't have much to gain from a lower crawl ratio.

Now with that in mind, if the torque converter were replaced with one of a lower setting, would it be taking place of te doubler?

Not really a higher stall torque converter gives you more torque but again, you've got a 4:1 and probably some gears in your axles. (if you don't, I sujest you consider that next). That combined with a standard transmission should be low enough gearing for whatever you want to do, then on top of that you've got an automatic transmission and the torque multipying factor of the torque converter you should be geared plenty low. Baisically what I'm saying is the stock torque converter should be more than adequate. Most doubler setups are only usefull on rigs with really large tires and even then provide much lower gearing than is really usefull. Remember low gearing is very important but wheelspeed is also very important for certain circumstances.
I sugest you keep the 231 but if you're going to do some rough wheeling I highly recomend gearing you axles way down to remove stress from the T-case.

So with the 4.88's and my 4:1, theres just not much more I can do to it? I asked to begin with since Ive gone full blown trailer princess untill next winter and I go buggy time, Im just looking at stuff to improve upon until then.

You could go lower. Don't get me wrong. If you really want it then do it but it's not necessary. You should be plenty low enough to crawl just find. I watched a sweet cruiser try to claw it's way up a hill and eventually break yesterday (I think I recognized it. Maybe a member of the board). Anyway, maybe a little more wheelspeed might have helped him bump past the obstacle he was trying to get up. If you want the lower gearing I would sujest a Klune V just for the space savings. Doublers take up a lot of space

What diff gears are you running right now? I have 4:88's with 35's and stock TC gears and I think I like it, yeah IF I had the money I might consider a 4:1, but I say get the diff gears installed, wheel it and see what you think...
