Scout Engine Swap???????

Im new to building scouts Have build lots of 4x4's But this is the first scout I have a 1977 scout terra with a 345 and tf auto the engine has a rod knock and I would like to swap to a more common motor. Is there another motor that would bolt up to the same trans.? (Chevy,ford,dodge,etc.)

I'm no expert w/ the newer scouts but you have a Chrysler 727 tranny that would allow you to just switch to a Dodge motor and bell housing and keep the tranny and D20. Troutbum would know for sure, PM him if he doesn't see and respond to this.

If you give up looking for a common motor my dad has a low milage 345 in his garage he'll sell... PM me if you're interested.

And if you want support in the aftermarket go with a chev motor because all the wiring harnesses, parts and pieces are easy to find. (I dare you to find a dodge after market engine wiring harness for a 5.2 or a 5.9L).

I could rebild the 345 I have thought that would be cheper to just swap the one I have I was looking to get a dodge 340 or 360 but I don't know if it will bolt up to the trans I have thanks.

I agree, just add some oil and drive it for a couple more years while searching for another 345 or a 392.

You all are funny :greg: You'll end up giving in someday... I say chop it up and resurrect it from low rpm's, and an overweight status, etc... Chevy all the way....

The 345 is backed by the IH727. The case is unique to IH but the guts are more or less the same as any other 727.

a 360 is a good choice, but you will need to find a matching tranny. If your current IH727 is fresh you might be able to save a couple of bucks by swapping the guts. You could also swap the tailhousing and keep the D20. You will need to fab all new mounts.

The 345:
weighs about 750 lbs
probably produces <100 HP (assuming your block is 28 years old, hell it only had 160 from the factory)
will run forever 300K+.
Nearly free if you come get the one off my shop floor

The 345 is not:
A torque monster, stump puller or the like
a good power to weight ratio
a good rockcrawling motor
cheap to build

as for me I am adding over 100 cubes and losing over 100 pounds...

damn, yeah number changed I Pm'ed you my new one. Got a new job and been busting my arse, between that and hunting no time for anything latlely. I only went wheeling once all summer .
