scout rear dana 44 bearing pull through???

I recently put a rear scout dana 44 in my jeep scrambler. Today while driving I could hear a clanking sound. I found my drivers side rear axle shaft had started to pull out of the housing. I found some retention plates that say they "eliminate pull through". Is this what it is called? also I tried to remove the shaft entirely, but it seem jammed up, I am guessing the bearing is fubared. Any tips or tricks on removing the shaft after this has happened??? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

If I remember right there are four bolts holding the axle in. Once those are removed I have used a slide hammer to get the axle shafts out.

Is there a lot of play in the shaft? Where it comes part way out or is it just really snug?

Yeah, just four bolts on the backing plate hold in the axle. Something must have been broken or loose to start walking out that way. It's probably because you used a Scout axle on a J**p.

I have removed the four bolts and the axle still wont slide out. I have not tried using a slide hammer... There is probably half a inch to a full inch play in the shaft. I have found one other post on the the internet and a youtube video where this has happened. The retainer that is pressed on behind the bearing assembly moves??? I will get the diff cover off tomorrow and see if the splines are damaged or if there are any broken pieces.

Depending on if there is any damage done to the bearings will change how hard it is to remove.

Is it an open or locked axle? If it has the stock ring and pinion from 197? It could be snug from time and no damage.

I pulled the axle apart, required a a slide hammer on the drivers side. The bearing looked as if it exploded. The casing was gone and there were only a couple bearing rollers left. I am guessing the axle had sat for a while and the bearing got corroded. I purchased the axle under the impression the bearings and everything were new, when the locker was installed, maybe just the inner bearing had been replaced. I had only put ten miles on the jeep since swapping axles. Went to six states and got the parts to get it up and running again. I will post pictures of what I found...The axle has a detroit locker and 4:56 gears.
