To start off, HUGE thanks to Dusty and Laura Sexton for having everyone out to their place in Kamas. I think I can speak for everyone in saying it was a super good time!!!
So for me being a somewhat new guy to UT and not currently owning a bronco I was somewhat skeptical of what to expect when rolling into a big name shop focusing on Ford while towing in a jeep based buggy. Not to mention I've seen a couple Ultra 4 races that Dusty competed in and that level of motorsports can be a bit intimidating as well. I’m here to tell ya I had no issues at all... as I pulled in there were several cool rigs lined up on the driveway already. I was welcomed by all and was promptly directed to drop the rig, park the trailer and come grab a burrito & breakfast beverage. I got my rig all situated and started a little mingling out on the back porch, I’m a bit shy when meeting new people like this, but I felt like I was around some good, like minded people and enjoyed the laid back environment and super cool surroundings (great views of the mountains, cool rigs, Sweet freaking shop, very chill house and patio environment).
I was told I should be good to drive the buggy down to the car show as its only a mile or two as long as I was in the middle of the pack... that worked out great, I’m sure I had them portals and stickies up to ~50mph hahaha. We all took our spots out front and proceeded to check out the car show. Now, I knew I wasn’t in for any hardcore wheeling that day, but that was cool with me... being the gearhead I am and to have never been in that area yet, I just couldn't pass it up. My buddy Sean and I walked around checking out the cars and just relaxing a bit from the typical work week grind. I couldn't have asked for a better way to pass the time before a trail ride!!!
Everyone gathered and we headed out of town to go hit the trails. I think everyone in town really enjoyed seeing the convoy of offroad trucks cruising thru town like a bit of parade. The trails provided us a chance to start the actual poker run first draw. Later when we get back to the shop for dinner there will be prizes of all sorts for winning hands. At this time we were deep into the trails and when we stopped everyone took a bit to talk and wait for any stragglers to take catch up. The views were amazing and the weather was super nice out too. I’m not exactly sure of the trails we were on, but it was mentioned that there were tons of mountain fire roads all thru out the area that provide endless amusement of UT back country exploration.
We made it to the top of the mountain and broke out some lunch and misc snacks... I noticed that I subsequently knew a few people (or people knew me) off RME and it was nice to effortlessly joke around and bs with everyone. It was cool to see that the more you interact with people here on RME, your pretty much guaranteed to run into them on the trail at some point.
the weather didn't look so good off in the distance, but besides about a 10 min rain it didn't ruin the day or the trip in any way... I was I think the only one without some sort of canopy and I can't complain too much about what materialized (disposable poncho's saved the day)
We worked our way back down the mountain enjoying the views and a bit of lightening in the background. At the base of the canyon there was a bit of a downpour for a mile or so back to the shop, but I don’t think anyone melted so not too much of an issue. By time we all got parked on the Dusty and Laura's property the rain had subsided and we did a bit of thrashing on a couple rock gardens by the shop. It was super cool to see everyone step up and do a little wheeling in 4 low. After that we headed in to the shop for a banquet style dinner and to check out what all the poker hands were. I didn't stay too much longer, but did hang out to exchange numbers with some folks, talk about future trail rides and to once again say thanks to the Sexton family for being awesome hosts!!!
