--UPDATE--Shop recommendation for Toyota gear setup

This has to have been discussed before but I came up empty with a search.

Some background:

The Shop that setup my 4.56's did a terrible job on my 4Runner and last year the ring gear grenaded and they "made it right" by replacing the entire e-locker and third member...not cheap but necessary. Anyway I will not deal with them again, my problem is I have NO confidence in my rear end. I get a vibration when holding speed (it goes away when accelerating) at 80mph and a shudder when coasting down from 85-70moh. I hate the feeling--not so much the vehicle shudder, but the pucker in MY rearend! I feel like it's a time-bomb, not a feeling anyone should have and certainly not one from a low miles 3rd gen 4Runner.

Who can make this right and for what $$. There is a Toyota gear guru in AZ (www.gearinstall.com) but I would rather stay local and decrease the turn around time.

I wouldn't mind having a solid spacer installed but at the very least, the quality of the pattern needs to be verified before I destroy another E-locker.

I'm looking for some serious peace of mind.

Are you willing to pull the third member out, or are you wanting to just drop the vehicle off somewhere?

what shop did you have it done at orginaly?

just so i dont make a mistake of going there to have any work done

I highly doubt you will;)

They are a large performance diesel shop in the south end of the valley.

My advice is to do your research here and other places before you commit to a shop and you should be fine.

I was in a bind to get the work done and I should have been more educated in my decision.

Definitely give Carl a call. I had him install some lockers in my D60/D70 axles and check the gears at the same time. He did a fantastic job. He will treat you right!

-update-

With the addition of the Flatbed as a DD I was able to really limit my usage of the 4Runner. However, enough was enough so ricsrx and I pulled the 3rd member and found 4 broken teeth from the ring gear. The inside of the housing was also chewed up, it's difficult to tell what incident it was from.

I got the 3rd dropped off to I Lean and will have it setup with a new master kit, solid pinion spacer and gears. I am very interested to see what I Lean feels the problem was...bad gears? Poor setup? Debris left in the housing from the previous install?

ricsrx had a newly setup e-locker 3rd hanging around with 5.29's so we swapped that in for the time being. (Thanks!!)

The 3.4L really moves with 5.29's!!

You might check your driveshaft for wear also... The vibration you described sounds like it could be u-joints, a sloppy driveline slip-yoke, or even incorrect pinion angle. Of course the broken gears could be to blame too, but they may not be the entire problem.

Just a thought.:)

Good call with Carl, he really knows gear installs. I've had him set-up a couple axles for me and they have worked flawlessly.

I agree, in fact earlier this year I thought I had found my problem. At some point the driveshaft had come apart and when it was re-installed it was out of phase.
