I was looking a Kurt's 'Travel Trailer' on his website today and I got extremely jealous. I've always wanted to do more camping, but the size of my vehicle has always limited me. You just can't fit that much into a Samurai (duh). So I recently acquired a '91 Sami that I'm going to be swaping engine components off of and then part out. Should I build a trail trailer out of the back half?

yes, and I have a friend that is building one like the one on wild yoats. It seems like it the new cool thing to do.

Yeah, it would be cool. Getting done with school is motivating me to run more trails and I want to be able to go way out there and camp. I've sketched out a few ideas that I think would be cool. I'm not looking at doing a generator or propane or anything like that, just a convenient place to store a cooler, an awning and all my gear.

Hop on the bandwagon ;)

Did you see my tech page? It has alot of links at the bottom to other trailer/tent companies...

Are you considering putting a tent up top?

The only downfall I can see to your plan is towing with a Samurai... a loaded offroad trailer can easily hit 1000lbs, say you build light & pack lighter, mabey you weigh in under 500lbs, still a pretty big anchor behind a Samo ;)

Sami's catch fire trying to drive themselves to the trail. I wouldn't put a trailer behind it.

If you want more room, buy a more practical vehicle.

Yeah, I used your tech page, great resource. I intend to make it as light as I can. Basically just a storage compartment. When I think about it more, I'm sure I'll have some questions for you. Plus with the EFI swap the Sami should have more guts.

I used to tow a small trailer all the time when I lived in Washington. We would pack it full of camping gear and head into the mountains, a 2 hour trip each way. The sammy was a bit fresher back then, and I was only running 32's, but it did fine. I took the same trailer over the Rubicon several times. Just build it as light as possible, and you should be okay.

So tell me, is this aggression against Samurai's a subconscious effort to make up for the fact that you have a vehicle with a wholly inadequate engine? :p

possibly. or just the general disposition of most sami people ;)

But you're right, my motor isn't any more capable of pulling a trailer than a sami. It probably would catch fire.
