Well, I am putting a currie high pinion 3rd member in my front 9 inch. I have heard some bad things about detroits if you break a hub or shaft. I have also heard that they are stonger than the others if you don't brake other stuff. I am going with good chromoly shafts, but can't afford really nice ujoints. Would it be worth putting in a lockrite or aussie, or shoud l I just do a detroit anyway? What so you guys think.

you know I hear everyone saying the if you break a shaft with a detroit myth for awhile....

I personally think its a old wives tail. I have seen at least 7 broken shafts with no damage to a Detroit. Including busting my dana 60 chromoly shaft right at the Detroit. The splines were perfect inside the locker and the shaft was twisted bad. I was running 44" tires. If it could hold that shock load I wouldnt worry about it at all. I even tore the Detroit completely down to check it. 2 years old and still looked brand new.

Im sure its happened before but its not a EVERYTIME occurance like everyone wants you to think.

Im not saying to buy a Detroit. Just dont let that be the only reason you dont. I personally think the Aussie and lockrites are great ways to go. I ran a lockrite in my D44 front for years with no issues. Super cost effective and work great!

D60 and bigger don't have the problem as much.

I've watched Badger destroy 2 or 3 detroits in his XJ by breaking a shaft, a D30, an 8.25 and I think a D44.

Come to think of it, I think the D44 might have gone when a Warn Premium let go.

I had bad luck with the lockright in my yj. It was a daily driver, which was my first strike. I lost a driveshaft a time or two, and getting home and driving on the streets after that was miserable. It also wore out after awhile and would no longer engage. iirc when I pulled it apart right before I sold it, the teeth were worn.

Within a matter of months 2 guys on here broke shafts in their front Dana 60 and they both took out their Detroits, Shawn & BadBuggy. That made me want to stay away from Detroits in front axles.

That said... if you buy chromo-shafts and high strength joints that won't break, there won't be a problem. Those Spicer Dana 60 non-serviceable u-joints are quite strong, that's what I was running in the TJ and they held up fine. They aren't nearly as spendy as CTM's ot Longfield joints, but seem to be strong enough.

I've ran a Lockright for years without any stress. I feel that the Aussie's are a little higher quality though, but they were not around when I bought it.

I have always ran a unique combination of oil that I feel has really prolonged the life of my locker so maybe that's the secret--I don't know.

For my money I'd go Aussie. I think that if I were to spend all the extra money for a Detroit then I'd spend a little more and go with a selectable locker. Just a thought :)

2 of the shafts Im thinking of were a D44. i dont know anyone that would sink that kind of money in a d30

I don't see why people sink money into D44s..... as for the D30 detroit, they make them and they sell.

IMHO the detroit is hands down the better locker, but they can and do break when a shaft goes.

I have an Aussie in the rear of my 4runner. It has worked very well so far. There are people on the Marlin board that are running 42's on their Aussie with no breakage.
Myself, I've got duals, 5.29's but only on 35's.

From everything I've read the Aussie is getting better feedback than the Lock Right.

For what it's worth

I've got a lock right(sp?) in the front and Aussie in the rear of my runner, haven't had any problems in a year with duals 5.29 & 35s. Aussie is or was a little cheaper in price, but had good reviews from alot of people. I kinda feel the same as Rot Box if and when i spend that much I'll go selectable. JMO

I have broken 3 9" shafts in one day and at leasy 6 shafts all together on the same Detroit with no problems with the Detroit! Then I finally bumped up to 35 spline.
Detroit is the way to go in a 9". Check Ebay or musclemotorparts.com for take out NASCAR Detroits. Last time I looked they were going for about $250.

I have a 35 spline 9 inch detroit in the rear(haven't had a chance to brake it yet). I already have the 31 spline detroit for the front. I was just wondering if it would be worth selling it and getting an aussie or lockrite. I bought chromoly shafts for the front haven't gotten nice ujoints yet. The inner shafts are 1541h from currie, the outers are one superior and one yukon USA from hartwig. I will probably brake a hub or joint and didn't want to take out the locker and replace it then when I could just replace it now.

Back in the day when I had a rig to wheel I had a lockrite in the front of my CJ's D30. I loved it. I was running 4.56's and 33's. My only downfall was the weak OEM u-joints that snapped like toothpicks, although in fairness I think I had a steering stop issue that was binding the joints.

Never a problem from the lockrite.

Just my $.02 worth

Aussie. Simple to install, cheap to buy, cheap to replace, doesn't break like a detroit, doesn't replace your carrier (do carriers on 9" ever break?), smoother than a detroit or lockright, quieter than a detroit or lockright. Thats my vote.

Just a suggestion, if you are looking at the Lock-Rite, go the next step and check out the Powertrax No-Slip. I have been running one in the rear 44 on my rig with 35" MTR's for about 5 years now. Strong and very streetable.
