SM465 or Automatic

Well, the crossroads are approaching and I'm going to have to decide which tranny to go with. I have wanted an SM465 for some time but now wonder if an auto would be better. My questions/concerns:

1. Is the throttle control of an automatic with higher gearing better than the 6.55:1 compound 1st gear of the 465?

2. This is in a TJ so transmission length is crucial and the 465 is approx half the length of an auto.

Thanks for your thoughts.

What will it be used for? For me on hard trails there is no transmission other than auto.... but for easier mountain roads and wandering the desert a stick is a lot more entertaining.

465's in particular are VERY entertaining when you miss the notchy reverse shift trying to back down a nasty hill, and then nearly sh*t yourself as you slide all willy-nilly on the brakes, trying not to roll down some awful hill south of Tooele, hours from help and with no radio or cell phone.

I mean, if you're into that kind of entertainment. :D

Everyone I've known with a 465 liked it for a while and then wanted an auto. Auto's in TJs are easy. If you're not off the hook hard core, and AW4 out of an XJ is a great swap. I had a friend that put a 700r4 in his TJ, but he had the shorter Atlas T-case. Lot's of options.

I dig my 465. I killed an auto with the same motor and the 465 just laughs at it.

In a purpose built crawler/racer I would rather have a fairly built auto. ATLEAST a shift kit and regular fluid changes.

Auto for hardcore stuff. I think a manual would be fun for rallying around the desert and it is more fun around town.

Just so much more control with an auto--2 feet + torque converter = infinitely variable crawl ratio

I have ran both and will comment on each. I was also a die hard SM465 man, the feel of "crawl" was pumping through the veins. The fact that I didn't have to touch the throttle and could idle up and over almost anything was a true thrill. It was a very hard day for me when I switched over to an auto. However, the fact that I don't have to worry about that third pedal is nice. The fact that when I hit the gas in low range there is no limit (so to speak) of rapping out, the auto runs through all three gears. The softness of the auto is lovable..

I love my TH400 in my buggy.
I like my SM420 in my Commando/street ride. I do wish at times I had an auto in the Commando...

I'm a hard core 465 fan.

My next tranny will be an auto.

Oddly...in my "old" scrambler, I'd rather have the auto on the street. On the trail, I only really wish I had the auto at nasty ledges.

In the "new" scrambler, I'm gonna try the 465 with the 454 for a while before I decide to go Auto.

My JK will be an auto.
I think.

Are you the guy who had his scrambler all rebuilt (similar to pimp my ride)?
