Made my first run out to RS and CON on sunday. I had a blast on CON and cannot wait to go again. Thanks to the guys for the pull at the end. -Marcus

wow!! that trail has gotten beat hard.
f#$% the bypass
I see we have an Alex Jones fan. He was pretty popular in Austin.

Yah it didn't seem like much of a bypass. The loose dirt made it worse than it looked :ugh: . After a couple of different (unsuccessful) lines I called it a day.-MP

STAY ON THE **** TRAIL, OR WE WILL NOT HAVE ANY TRAILS LEFT TO MAKE BYPASSES ON!!!

It sounds like you didn't know that you were straying from the trail. Sorry all our frustrations are coming down on you, Goat. The trail goes up the ledge to right, and if you can't make it, winch or strap up it. The bypass to the left didn't exist, and should never have been created. Whoever went that way first should be shot. :mad2:

Correct me if I am wrong, but..... There is not supposed to be a bypas there.

You are 100% correct... that trail is falling victim to the ever present "trail widening" and "weaving"... I can't beleive that... there were a bunch of trees there in the early days (and I mean early days ;) ).

No one to blame but wheelers? I would pay $100 for a picture of a rig driving over the trees that used to be there on the left side of the Eagles Nest (not a nest now, more like a rockscape?)

This area is NOT open to cross country travel, meaning, stay on the actual trail. :mad2:

For those that have never been on the trail before and go out for the first time... try and head out with someone that has, hopefully they can show you which areas are the legit ones...

This problem is the same thing that is literally killing Moab trails right now, some to the point of them closing areas to Cross Country travel, because of redundant routes and weak bypasses.

Yeah Goat. Nobody's firin' on you, just in the wrong place at the right time. ;)

And when I mentioned the garbage on the ground, I wasn't implying it came from you guys....

We all believe in 'tread lightly' and 'pack out what you pack in'. If you see trash on the trail, pick it up even though it's not yours, kind of thing. I'm not sure if there are trails getting closed down in Texas where you are from, but people round here are fighting tooth and nail to keep what we have as BLM and others close and change (Pritchett) trails to suit needs.

Get hooked up with the Utah Four Wheel Drive Association (cruiseroutfit can help you) and get involved. Learn the doos and don'ts and help us keep the trails open.

I understand and respect your frustrations. I would hate to lose access to these trails since wheelin was half the reason I moved here. I have only been out to RS twice and finally ran CON after following a few rigs up. The first thing I noticed was how many campfires (filled full of beercans) were still burning and piles of trash around them. Everything in Texas is pay to play as of 01/04 due to TX rivers act. Most of everything there is mud/dirt and the only rocks and riverbeds we had access to were private. http://www.katemcyrocks.com/ Yes, I made it up WW. I had to go high and then use a bit of the skinny pedal to get up. -MP

Put a sign up. Not everyone who runs theses trail are on RME. Add a sign and save youre voice when some ignores the sign. I would place the sign so they can not go up the left side.

The problem is the bypasses have been so heavily used that they look like part of the trail. And someone that doesn't know the trail (Goat's first time on it) would NEVER know. Now I can see taking an obvious one that requries you to run over a tree, that is BS and I agree with you completely.

And herein lies the problem. How is a newcomer to the area supposed to know which routes are bypasses when they all might look equally travelled?

The sign does say, "do not modify or create new routes" but how is one to know which routes are the new ones and which routes are the official ones (other than experience).

This is a serious question that is affecting our collective access to public land. As Kurt pointed out, it's at the heart of some of the Moab problems.

What can we do?

Do we create a roster of "certified" trail guides who make themselves available to show the less experienced among us what the official routes are?

Do we tag the illegal bypasses with orange marker paint on a weekly basis?

Do we haul boulders in to block the bypasses?

What suggestions are out there? Constructive suggestions by the way.

Joining U4WDA is a start and it's something that everyone should do. It's also something that everyone can do very easily. It's only $10! Anyone here who's not a U4WDA member should go to

http://www.u4wda.org/join_us.shtml

and sign up right now! Wayne, are you a member?
