Snakes night run Feb 26th 2011

Sounds like snakes was a popular trail on the 26th. We ran it at night to test out my sidekick. It was one of the best trips I've been on, lots of fun. Despite the day group saying it was icy, we didn't have that experience. It was a great snow run, and it wasn't too slippery. I've been out there in the mud when it was way slipperier.

Most pics are of my sidekick since it was the first time out.

It was good to meet NRSPENCE. Great driving nate!

Rick got hi-centered taking the high line through the rock garden.

it took nrspence's winch to get rick unstuck. It actually pulled that giant boulder back a few inches!

We had some new wheelers with us. THey did great.

it was definitely one of my top 3 favorite times up snakes. We had the right size group, we were all prepared, and great company. Not too fast, and not too slow. Great run.

Thanks Steve for putting it together, I hope it was just my clutch that went out and not something worse, it was a great time, thanks again.
Rick
Also I appreciated you waiting for us to get off the trail.

thanks for joining us. Man, I hope it's just your clutch too. Did you figure out why it wouldn't start that one time?

I shut it off and started it a couple times since and have no problems, i will replace it when i pull it to check the clutch.

Looks awesome :) Rattle snake wasn't bad for us during the day. It was up near WW and Constictor was icy. The hills mixed with people driving and packing the snow was the problem.

Ric- I got stuck on the right side area too. Not sure if my track were still there, but it took some tire spin and bumping to get free. I got stuck facing the rock wall, as I slide to the left.

Yep if felt good right up untill i got to the wall, it broke loose and slid left and i was done, then i stalled it and the starter failed.....

Yup, just before you start to climb and make the left to come off of it. My left rear was on a rock, but slipped off rear diff was getting stuck on it.

Steve-

In another thread, you said you got rocker panel damage on your rig despite having installed your new sliders. Why/how did that happen? Are the sliders not strong enough (they bent under the pressure)? Did you find an irregularly-shaped rock that got past the sliders? What happened?

Thanks for the pics steve!! Sorry I bailed last night after we got off the trail, I started to feel like garbage, I just wanted to get home ASAP and even that was a struggle. I even ditched my Betos dinner plan :(

I had a blast!! Thanks for the invite Steve!! Rick, I hope it is nothing serious that happened

I knew I should've headed over to RS last night! I was sitting in Tooele around 7-8pm thinking of heading that direction. Bummer.

I dunno yet. I think it's just a bad design on the sliders. They only have two legs connecting them to the frame, and they're bolt-on sliders. I'll be adding 2 more legs and welding them on now. Kinda sucks when you pay $300 for sliders that don't do their job

Way back in the day, I owned an XJ. I installed rock sliders on it, though I cannot recall which brand they were. They had two arms that bolted to the frame rails like yours, but there were also brackets attached to the arms which bolted to the pinch weld of the unibody in a few spots. The end result was good strength--I never had them bend despite repeated bashing. Here I am high-centered after landing on my left slider, for example:

I know this isn't a great photo, so here's another shot. The slider itself was only a 2"x2" square tube; it didn't even have an extra part to extend out for added protection.

Maybe this can give you a helpful idea.

thanks. The slider didn't bend, but the legs deflected up into the rocker. At least that's my theory, I haven't fully checked it out yet.

Oh, okay. Well I'm sure you'll come up with a creative way to make them better. I hope to be able to stop by one evening and perhaps I'll see if I can offer any helpful suggestions.
