Does anybody else get emotional when you finally see your shaft that you haven't seen for 18 years?

I cut this axle down and had it splined by a guy from Love Machine around 2003. Saw it for the first time since then when I pulled it out today. Got a kick out of the writing on it.

I pulled both axles out to be regeared with 5.38's and actual lockers. Both of my Lincoln Lockers still looked really good, so that was a nice pat on my back. I did notice a few issues that were about to bite me.

The hub bearing nuts on the driver's side were finger tight. The steering arm on top of the passenger knuckle was loose, and when I tried to turn one of the loose bolts it came right out of the hole. It had snapped at some point and was floating around in the hole. The front diff had water contamination inside. Not a ton, but some rust had set in on the carrier and top of the diff cover. The good news is that I'm replacing that carrier with a locker and the full hydro won't use that steering arm.

Can you believe I've had this POS back in my life for a year now? Wheeled her once and broke her.

Anyway, back to the grind. I decided to fix the horrible factory plug welds on the rear axle. Burning off the impregnated gear oil and other nasty grunge was semi-successful. There was a ton of old weld flux still inside the weld that I chipped/pounded/ground out.

If I remember right, it doesn't hold the sheen well unless painted over after. Seems to be what I'm remembering from when my pops painted some stuff on his YJ when I was a kid. Not very UV resistant or something.

I cut open Britney's old gas tank with the idea of modifying it for slightly more capacity, deleting the nasty gas "cap" I was using, and if course for looks. This might be the nastiest thing I ever built. 😳
