Legend has it that a guy was welding next to the hole in the 90's and the methane blew up...killed him and severely injured 2 other guys nearby IN heavy equipment. Imagine a 30' wide concrete lined 1000' barreled cannon going off in your face...I for one would rather avoid anything that would light that candle!!
