Spark plug exploded.....

On the drive home yesterday from a trip my Jeep made a big bang and then the sound of air excaping rapidly. I pulled over and one of the spark plugs up front at broken into peices all that was left was the hex and threads inside the engine and no evidence of anything else. Has anyone ever seen this? We disconnected the injector and limped it to Price to get a new plug. Everything worked fine after that.

So could it have just been loose?

Is my engine running lean and heating up to much? (I suspect something is up egt's are about 1200 degrees @ 65 mph and 1400 degrees when the boost gets around 3-5 pounds.

Any ideas?

SOmething's up w/your tune. Those EGT's sound pretty hot.

Wow, those EGTs are HOT. At least for a diesel. I'm not sure what to tell you about the Chrysler V8.

Marc is right that is pretty hot even for a diesel, I would say you def got something going on in a gas engine

Dom, I assumed timing as I've seen a lean spark plug melt the electrode all the way out . Any pics of yours?

After it was a dark blob on the horizon, it looked like a Jeep on the side of I-70 with it's hood up...

I don't think that there are any pics of what was left of the plug. Like Dom said, just the main metal body of the plug was left.. No real evidence of anything else..

No pics since we were all kind of pissed off and trying to get home. I know it needs a good tune and I am going to go through all the spark plugs this weekend and check them. It has a fireball tcs2 ignition system that can be adjusted six ways from Sunday but I know nothing about that stuff. I will have to take it to the shop. I was just curious if anyone had any other ideas. The temps are for sure to warm. I need to see where the sensor was mounted before I spend to much money.

that is definitely odd, but i would bet it has something to do with those exhaust temps. at least it didn't ruin your engine!

Sounds like you are very lean. Only 3-5 psi? Is it a centrifugal? Using an intercooler?

I only know turbos from 80s Chryslers... But boost is boost.
