Tomorrow night I'm going to be installing a Spartan in my '03 TJ Dana 30 with 3.73 gears. Does anyone know if I will have to grind the carrier to make it fit?

I have a some what un-reliable friend that says he has done lock-rights a few times and had to grind and I found one decent write up online that said the person had to grind for the spartan.

The Spartan is supposed to be "easier" to install so I'm hoping I won't need to. I really just want to know if I will have to so I'm not trying to find a die-grinder at the last minute to make sure it is driveable on Saturday.

No experience with the spartan but i have installed a few lock rights in dana 30s and never had a problem. Are you taking this out on saturday???

Thanks Steve, you are probably right about the drive though.

Yes skippy I will be taking it out on Saturday unless of course I can't get it done but i cant see any good reason for me not to.

The install instructions don't say anything about grinding so unless. Since you have done lock rights with no issues I think it will work just fine. The spartans are supposed to be easier.

where are you planning on doing the test run??? I have been trying to find someone to hit a trail with this weekend

I've got a spartan in my front 60, install was cake! This is the second one, first had engagement issues (factory defect) which is rare with the amount they have sold.

You shouldnt have to grind if the directions done say you do. I installed one in my toyota 8inch front axle, took me about 3 hours from start to finish, the reason they are easier than other lunch box lockers is the fact that you put it all together and incert the pins that hold it all closed and slip it into the carrier, pull the pins out and your done. I have to say it is much easier that a lockright

Ive installed lots of lockrites and spartans....Im guessing that the reason your friend thought he had to grind the carrier is because he was probably trying to install with the thrust washers on the side gears and it wouldnt all fit.. the spartans are easier and they install without the thrust washers. Spartans also are stronger and come with a hardened cross shaft for the same price as a lockrite.
