Is there a spool for a 14 bolt? Just Curious. Also who would go for spool (if one is made) or a detroit with a 14 bolt?

If you looking at spooling, then I would Weld it.

I run a Detroit and Love it.

We welded Harkinoffs 14 bolt and it does fine, I know that he will soon put a Detroit in to try and save his tires.;)

Oh ya,

The Detroit will lock and release, so as a daily driver it can be fun. The weld never releases so you are churping your tires every time you turn.

The Detroit is only around $350.00 and is money well spent. If money is an issue the welding is free or close to it.

and if you get tired of the welded rear, you can always put a detroit in and you have no drawbacks. your carrier hits the scrap heap anyway!!:D

No actually your carrier does not hit the scrap heep when putting a detroit in a 14T you use the stock carrier...there is not a full spool available for the 14T, but there has been talk that DTD is coming out (or may have already) with a mini spool...I am personally going to go detroit with my 14T:D:D:D

i always thought that a detroit always replaced the carrier with an entirly new unit. i know the ez-locker does not replace the carrier. i also know the lickright does not replace the carrier. the ARB does and the ox-locker does but no ox and probably no arb for the 14bolt. now my buddy has a FF-14 on the shop floor that is going under his commando with a 8lug heavy 3/4 44 that is going under the front. d-44 is easy to get stuff for but the 14-bolt is proving difficult so maybe welding is an option

lets talk welding strategy......

what is it that we should be welding in there. should we just weld the spider-gears into a gigantic cluster-truck and then make sure we can get the side pins in and out or should you, for safetys sake, weld everything to everything else and weld the side gears to the carrier??

what type of welder should be used?? can a stick welder be safely used if the slag is dealt with??

talk to me men!!!

The Detriot for the 14 Bolt is the only one that just replaces the spider gears, the rest of the carrier is used with the Locker.

As per welding, I have been instructed that you should use an Arc welder with Nickle Rod. That should be nice and strong. Beyond that, I'm clueless. I have yet to weld a diff!

The ff14 is not difficult to get stuff for. In the full floating 10.5" 14bolt ONLY, the detroit replaces the spider gears, all other applications it replaces the carrier. Ff14's are as easy to get stuff for as anything else, and are VERY common.

Detroit, EZ, lockrite, and Eaton (govlock and elocker) are all available. Dunno about now, but you used to be able to get center sections from Boyce with 4.56 gears and a detroit for $275 or so.

on a toy axle I stick welded the hell outa the spiders and they cracked the welds fairly fast. Did a little research and heard that you need to torch off the coating the gears have then weld em up. Just turn the buzz box up and hit it hard. Be generous and slow for "good penetration" Any other opinions on white trash lockers?? Any knowledge is good

I've welded about 8 different carriers and trust me, if you can get hold of a mig, use it. Stick will work, but you usually get slag all over the place. Dana44: just weld the spider gears at the corners and make sure it's clean before you do it. I did Todd's 44 this way and we had no breakage front or rear on Pritchet with 38's (and Todd does NOT hold back) then he swapped out his 44's for 14blt and 60, both welded. When he went to the larger axles, we noticed the things turning radius sucked, but it turned great with the welded 44's:confused: So we atrributed this to the added unsprung weight of the axles... they just make the tires grip better.

Well, I put the mini spool in my 8.8 and love it! Yeah, my tires are wearing out a little faster, but it handles far better than the detroit that I had in my 35. No more freaky lane changes, and cornering is never a problem. Even though this is my daily driver, I would definitely do it again. I probably should have welded the diff, but I got the mini for $38. I run quite a bit of air pressure, and it all seems to work fine.

How did you weld the 14bolt? Do you just weld the spiders to the side gear on one side and then flip it over to the other side of the carrier and do the same. Did you have any problem with the assembely warping and not fitting the case right?

I drove my Bronco dailly for 12+ years with a detriot in the rear, and either my wife or I drive the XJ daily with a detriot in the rear for 6+ years now. The driving habits you change for driving with a detriot are just natural to me now. The characteristics have never bothered me. My wife even loves the detroit in her XJ.
I put a mini spool in the Bronco for cost reasons when I upgraded to 31 spline shafts, I HATED it. It was miserable on the street, especially in parking lots and backing up. Offroad it was more difficult to turn when on had surfaces. As soon as money allowed I replaced the spool with a detriot (now all 35 spline). I also had the opportunity to drive a fullsize with a spool rear a few times, I did not like the way it handled either. It shredded tires.
I have never had excessive tire wear with the detriots. The MTR's on the XJ have 30K+ on them and still have 1/3+ tread. I rotate and balance them OFTEN.
I LOVE detriots and will only give it up in the Bronco if I am forced to go to 40 spline shafts (no detriot in 40 spline).

Yeah, that's pretty much how you do it. Just tack all the corners together at first, let cool, tack it more, let cool, the take it all the way out of the case and weld it up into a great big ball if mini-spool!

Look on the front page of www.coloradok5.com. There is a good article on welding the 14bff. You don't want to weld to the carrier, because you need it if you ever want to go Detroit. Some of the guys over there have 10 - 15,000 miles on their trucks welded in this configuration.

That is exactly the link I was trying to remember. It is a very simple process and the only permanent part you weld is the side and spider gears, and they will still come apart of you need them to, there is a slight amount of slack in it but usually not noticeable.
