Square or implement shaft?

Hey all,

I need a long travel driveshaft for the front of my SOA shackel reversed cj. This will be used in 4wd only so I'm less worried about balancing and high rpm use. I'm considering building a long travel driveshaft out of square tubing. I've seen a couple of write ups and it doesn't look to difficult. Anyone had experience with running one of these?

I've also seen suggestions to use pto implement shaft material to build a long travel ds. Anyone know if this kind of stuff (implement) is available locally? I've called around a bit but haven't located anything.

Thanks,
Brent B

I tried to do a square impliment shaft - they use a oddball u-joint and I could not find a conversion joint. I looked pretty hard so I'm pretty confident there's not one available.

I took the parts back and had Tom Woods build me one with 11" of travel - so far so good/

I like the simplicity of the square shaft, the real problem I see is balance. But other then that; square drive shafts are used alot in farm equipment, and that tell's you how strong they are!

Check these pics. Everytime I look at that pic I think of a twissler!!!

Gaylons in Lehi(?) I believe. I was going to have them build mine and went with Toms for some reason. Their long slip doesn't have too bad a price either.
