Anyone have any info on the trail from Squaw peak to Hobble creek canyon
I was on the road 15 years ago. Is it still open all the way from Provo Canyon to Mapleton?
Thx
Jeff

Its usually a very easy trail. I have driven it in a car but weather conditions and the season can make it more exciting. It the early spring/fall it can be snow covered and very muddy. Its basically a road that traverses from squaw peak road to hobble creek canyon. It does offer lots of camping and hiking extraodinary views and one optionally steep climb to a view of hobble creek canyon and all of southern Utah county. Its a great drive... It takes about a hour and half depending on speed. The road varies from wide dirt road to single lane steep drop off. The views are awesome.

Directions... Easiest way is to take 800 N in orem go east to provo canyon. About 2 miles up provo canyon is the squaw peak road (right side) take that to the top. Close to the top the road makes a T. Left takes you up and over to hobble creek... right takes you to the squaw peak look out. (the road is paved to this point and to the over look. The left road is paved for a short while then it turns to dirt.

The hobble creek side is harder to find. Its just a dirt road with a forest service gate. It sometimes is marked sometimes not.

I can, you probably can. Most people can't. Most people as in most people who go up there as in BYU students and out of staters. :D

I don't know what you guys are talking about, but it's not gonna take half and hour or any minivans. There is one spot that has snow covering the road sometimes until late in the summer. It's not a good road. I was on it three weeks ago, and theres parts that are pretty rough. Nothing difficult, but it'll slow you down (sharp rocks) and eliminate the minivans. I had to bypass snow once, and it would have been tough for any un modified 4x4 and impossible for a two wheel driver. WE only got half way, there was a truck stuck or abandoned in a snowy area. Snow was covering half the road making it only wide enough for one vehicle, and somebody got scared in some deep holes and ruts and just abandoned a truck right there, so we had to turn around. That was just after saddle on the south end. The trail is about 20 miles long from provo canyon to hobble creek canyon, maybe 15. With the rain lately, i'm sure its muddy, but that may have helped wash out some of the snow. I would plan for a good four hours and not expect it to be a normal dirt road.

i gaurantee you i've taken car's and a minivan over it, in my Cherokee i didn't drop below 25mph, sorry it takes half an hour until the little view spot before you decend into hobble creek, it's completely passable has been for about a month. I went up there bank bustin as soon as the gate was open on the provo side. It's a cakewalk dirt road with the exception of one spot where you have to pick a line if your in a minivan a stock cherokee will go right down the rough spot without a worry. I just got back from Goign through the whole thing in my cj7 and it was fine a little mud in a few spots but nothing unmanageable with a stock suv or even a subaru.

That road is the only place I've ever seen a cougar in the wild. I was driving it South to North, and high above springville before that saddle on the south end I had stopped to take pictures of the view. Suddenly this huge cat slinked up onto the road headed right for me, it saw me and froze as my jaw dropped and hairs prickled on the back of my neck! It seemed like it took me forever to remember I had my camera in my hand, got the shot through the windshield and a second later it disappeared down the slope.

oh yeah, if you go - give yourself time to enjoy the views and time for following slow minivans accross the narrow bumpy sections

It has nothing to do with all wheel drive, there would be some minivan clearance issues. And when I went, there is no way a minivan could bypass the snow drift that I had to. I nearly even got stuck.

5Doller and I went up there last summer in his minivan. I went all the way up on my own in a Grand Am last summer, too, and that was before I had any off road experience. It's entirely possible. :p

Very Dusty

It is not a difficult road, and I have seen cars up on it, but I wouldn't take my car as I value the oil pan a little too much. I think a low clearance vehicle would do a lot of scraping.

The problem with the trail is that it is extremely dusty. By far it is the most dusty trail I've ever been on, but I usually only go on it in the fall. So if it is wet right now, this is probably a good time to go to avoid the dust.
