squeak... squeak... squeak... squeak

My rig has developed this rhythmic noise (see subject line) when I am moving in 4 lo. It's very loud and is not there in 2wd, Full time but have not tried in part time.

Any ideas? I couldn't turn up my bumpin' tunes loud enough to drown it out.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

my front u joint on the rear drive shaft is grease-able and that was done just last month. I thought about this but I am perplexed why only in 4 lo?

Yeah, sounds like a U-joint to me too, on the front drive shaft. It's too late once they start squeaking. Greasing it may help for a while, but it'll need to be changed sooner or later.

my front drive shaft has CV ends not u joints though.... and it turns no matter what if I am in 2WD or 4WD. I have no problem believing my front drive shaft will need replacing, but my brain can't wrap around why 4Lo is all noisy and 4 Hi is quiet as a mouse.

..although later is pretty fun. Just changed a local's shaft joints here, one was.. alright, the other was dusty and full of ground-up Fail.

OOoh, just 4Lo, not 4Hi? That's more disturbing. (I didn't catch that tidbit earlier) What Tcase does that cute little car have in it? If it doesn't have a viscous coupling, take the front shaft out and drive around to see if that changes anything.

First of all... you should know that calling a jeep a car kills kittens.

The NV242, also known as Select-Trac. I am pretty sure I can drive 'er without the front shaft in but I'm not going to find a new'in in MOAB Sat AM

The front shaft might turn all the time but when it is not engaged it doesn't necessarily have torque on it. It might be the added torque causing whatever joint that driveline has to squeak. Check all your boots on your CVs going out to the front tires for tears and make sure everything feels nice and squishy.

Like has been said before once they start to squeak they are done for so get em replaced ASAP.

Found a new front driveshaft and it will be in MOAB Sat 1:30 PM. I'll remove the shaft (gigity) in the AM, have a look and see if the noise persists when in 4 LO.

Thanks for the advice.

I spent the day at Fins n Things and the shaft got a bit of a workout (gigity) but there were no noises. I now have a 2nd shaft that can be inserted (gigity) whenever I need it.

the front shaft in my Cherokee with a 242 transfer case and d30 had the CV joint go bad and I put the shaft I had in the garage that was made for a previous project with a 205 and d44 and it fit perfect and has been there for 6 mos. now.
I was going to get parts to fix the old one but found the splines on it were worn pretty bad. I think the play and vibration from the worn splines contributed to the CV joint failure.

I kind of have the same issue. I have a squeak (since coming back from Moab) that only squeaks when it wants to (if i wash the jeep the squeak goes away for a little while) it only squeaks with throttle. I THINK it is coming from the rear driveline, but have greased all of the fittings except for one on the upper part of the U-joint where its not a nublet to greese, but more of a hex headed shaped fitting. I'm not sure if that needs grease or what that is, but the sound is driving me crazy. Any ideas?

The fitting you're talking about is probably a grease zerk that accepts a needle-type attachment. The attachments are available at any auto parts store, and will attach to pretty much any grease gun. You just push the needle over the check ball in the center of the fitting, and hold pressure on it while you pump grease in.

Had the same issue on my TJ. It was the CV Joint on my drive line. There is a rubber boot inside it that was worn allowing dirt, etc to get into it. Drove me nuts until I found it.
