Starting Problem

All right I have this cool wagoneer (wood paneling makes it cool). That I want to ge out on the trails but it has a problem (duh). It starts fine when its cold and runs well but if it ever stalls or you turn off the motor once its warmed up it will never start again. It just spins ans spins forever untill it cools down (usually the next morning) and then starts fine. It sounded like it wasn't getting a spark so I replaced the cap and rotor, Ignition coil, wires, and plugs. But it still does it. What else could it be ? It does get gas to the carb (You can watch it drip in) so what else is there ?

When it is warm, have you actually pulled a plug cap and checked the spark? Also check your timing.

do a compression test when its hot and when its cold. compare the two.

If you find low compression, do a leak down test in the cylinders both hot and cold. look for leaky valves or rings that could contribute to low compression.

Look around I think you can get a cheapy tester that would work fine from Harbor Freight...have you checked the choke like Jeremy said??? I would have to lean towards a fuel delivery problem or more specifically a carb problem...my XJ (85) used to do the same thing till I took it and had a good rebuild done on the carb (I dont know much about carbs...:()

well maybe i'll have to tear the carb apart and re-build it then. Heres a scary thought for ya I can re-build an airplane carb but have never tried to re-build a car carb. Just think about it. They should be about the same dont ya think. If yours did the same thing they I guess I'm safe tearing it apart.

i didn't say mine did the same thing. but if your choke isn't working right, it could cause this. The butterfly on your choke should be closed when your engine is cold, and open when it gets warm. it will stay open once the engine starts, but when you shut it off at full temperature, and the choke closes, It won't start very easy.
