114 already....I wish I had $$ to buy!
At least Ford is ok!! BTW I think all this bailout crap sucks!
If you business fails, it FAILS!!!! They do not deserve to be rescued or bailed out!! Let them fail! It will creat a pool of skilled labor willing to work for a reduced wage once reality sets in.

I will be shocked if the 'bailout' for the retarded 3 helps at all... All i see it doing is prolonging their demise just a little bit longer.

Let them fail, and then the companies will be reorganized and better off than they are now.

The problem is the large pool of "skilled" workers, who are seeking manufacturing and industrial jobs in a market that does not have the jobs to offer. We are not an industrial nation anymore. I'm not sure what the effect of 100,000 workers (or what is the number..I just guessed)hitting unemployment lines would be on our economy. Can't be good.

The unions are behind most of the money for the bailout. Let them go into chapter 11, reorganize, let the unions get back to reality and hire them for the wages the Toyota and Honda employees are getting. I hears 1/3 less.

"The screwed up thing here is..

Last year Toyota and Gm sold roughly the same number of cars. within something like 15,000 total. Pretty much the same.

Toyota made 20 Billion in profit, GM lost 15 Billion."

I remember seeing figures not too long ago that showed the percentage of american parts and labor within vehicles, and I swear Honda or Toyota were at the top.

EDIT: "The Detroit Three employ 239,000 workers in the U.S. Counting other businesses that depend on the automakers, economists estimate that 2.5 million jobs would be lost if all three companies went out of business......"

And that's just in the US

I think that a lot of people fail to realize what that many people out of jobs would do to the economy. You think that it's bad now......take a look at the bigger picture.

Wouldn't surprise me. They've got some pretty big plants here.

Domestic manufacturers have some screwed up management practices, and that seems to be the difference between say, Toyota's success, and GM's abject failure.

I'm with you on this one. I think it will only prolong the time until they do crumble. Not that I want that to happen. It's just that the American public in general is too afraid of the current economic status to go out and start buying new vehicles like they were two or three years ago. And in order for the big 3 to survive long term, that's what it's going to take. A few billion spread out amongst three companies won't outlast the economic low we are in. What happens 6 months to a year down the road when people are still not buying cars like the big 3 need in order to self-sustain? Another bailout?

My thinking is, if they go out or cut back, there is skilled labor force in place, and plants that are idle, someone with the money and the plan will put that to good use. Sure the workers may have to settle for less, but it is what it is.
Honestly, I fear foreign investors less than I fear socialism. Car Czar is BS, again if they fail, they fail! Let it be. May be tough for a few years, but something will come along to replace them.
The foreign plants in the US do not allow union labor. Their hourly pay is on par with the big 3. Benefits/union bs, and other adds up to $12-$14 more cost per hour per employee for the big 3. Average UAW worker is making 10-15 more a year than I am....I don't feel bad if they have to settle for less.

I thinks its a joke. Lay it down for the unions. Take less and have a job or take more and loose yours. It's not like their are a ton of other auto jobs out there either right now.
