I have a 4.0 from a rolled 99 cherokee and want to put it in a 86 cherokee that has a v6. Has anybody atempted this before? if so what was the procedure? do I need an adapter plate(I have a manuel trans), I will more than likely need new motor mounts, I need as much info as possible, thanks

What v6 do you have in there now? I would rather have a v6 then the I6 they produce more power generally... not sure what you have...

I have the 2.8, but it is wasted, so I need a good engine, the inline is no cost to me that is why I thinkl I could do the swap with minimal cost, and it i FI

I did this swap om my 86. It is possible but requires a lot of work. You will need a donor cherokee because you will need to swap all of the wiring, motor mounts, gas tank, radiator, and radiator support structure, hood (if you use the newer style radiator stuff), and the bell housing. You also need to get a deeper bulge in the firewall. If you want more info you can call me and I can explain what I did.

The difference between the v6 he has and the 4.0 HO is staggeringly in favor of the 4.0. Like not even close. Having driven both, you would definitely rather have the 4.0.

yep, even the easily done V6 swaps in that jeep aren't as powerfull as the 4.0. That's a very difficult swap to do though, in my oppinion not worth the jeep.

exactly, you would be better off getting rid of the 86 and getting a 90+ (I know the I6 started in 87 but 90+ is the HO I believe, maybe 92+) with the I6 already...you would be dollars ahead. As Dave mentioned a little, the engine bays are smaller in the V6 cherokees so you need so do firewall mods just to make room. Then you need everything else from the donor.
