Street Legal OHV Insurance

As to not hijack Greenjeep's thread, I have a quick question regarding insurance. I know it has been discussed before, and I have read all of the related threads multiple times.

We're looking to make our (currently street legal) jeep OHV only, or street legal OHV. It is currently fully covered through USAA. We have really good rates and really wouldn't mind just leaving it on our current policy (full coverage).

My question:

Say the unthinkable happens and we total the jeep, either towing it somewhere or really mess it up on the trail. Will we run into trouble when we try to make a claim on it because it was OHV only?

That seems like something you would have to ask your insurance about. All the insurance companies I have been with would only cover a vehicle that was wrecked on a road and if it was offroad then it wouldn't be covered.

I guess I need to throw this out there for everyone that expects to license there Jeep or Buggy as a Street legal OHV. SB 22 that passed and goes into effect on July 1st will not allow you to do so. UHP did not want to deal with these types of rigs on the street so provisions were added to the bill to limit tire size, weight and height to eliminate these vehicles from being able to pass inspection. I know no one wanted to hear this but it is what it is. You can read the passed bill here http://le.utah.gov/~2009/bills/sbillenr/sb0022.pdf
Now there is planning under way to have this changed but for now it will not be possible to license one for the street. Trailering to the trail head in Moab and other communities that do not allow ATV’s on the road will be the only legal option.

Good news!

USAA will cover our TJ as an OHV, it's quite a bit cheaper than for street use with a lower deductible. Full coverage is only $2.50 more per month over liability, so we'll be keeping it fully covered.

Now my question is what USAA would considered totaled. If our rig is beat up in 5 years from now would I be able to collect insurance on it? :greg: Unfortunately they only cover replacement cost, nothing aftermarket, but it's better than nothing...

I just put regular insurance on my rig and it actually lowered my monthly rate. woo hoo.

And sadly, Todd is right, can't register the jeep as a street legal atv, yet. Hopefully we can get that changed in the future.

You can for now.

The change to exclude full-size rigs from qualifying is nothing new and sadly we all psuedo-supported it when we showed up the the Capitol rally to offer our support for the lawmakers, one of which is behind adding the exclusion language due to a non-existent problem. Sadly nobody even made an effort to re-work or halt the bill until it was half way into law. A broken system yields unsavory results. U4WDA needs to hire their own part-time lobbyist to work on this type of issues rather than waiting for the knee-jerk reaction of other "advocacy" groups IMO. They are spread too thin to represent the intentions and needs of all user groups.

I figured I might as well do it while it's still legal!

I agree with Kurt, being proactive is way better than having to be reactionary!!!!

p.s. The little license plate looks soooo small on the back of my CJ.
