Stupid Dana 60 Questions

I have a HP D60 from an 88 F350 and I have a few questions about it.

1988 and down have 1/2 lug studs right? Because the lug nuts from my late 70's 14 bolt don't fit and I thought those were 9/16. (I am stuck at work, so I can't measure right now) Has anyone had problems with the 1/2 studs breaking? Is it worth the trouble to go to 9/16 studs? (although it would be nice to have the same lug nuts front and rear)

Second question: My neighbor gave me a limited slip from a chevy 60. Will that carrier work in my reverse rotation ford 60? Both carriers are 4.10 and down. I don't really want a limited slip, but it's better than open. I really can't afford a lock right now, so free is good :D

Your 14 bolt does indeed use 9/16's. As to the diff I don't think that it will fit. I may be wrong but the chevy 60 is different than the ford reverse rotation 60. If I am wrong then someone needs to correct me. Hope this helps.

I have a 79 ford dana 60 and went to the junk yard and got hubs off of an 89 ford f250 with the Ibeam suspension and got the hubs off of it so that I would the same lugs front and rear. Cost me about $30.

The SRW lug studs are 9/16 fine thread

From the 60 Bible on Pirate. My 60's are all 9/16, I just went and checked two complete axles (one w/new hub/rotor/races from GM), and two sets of spare hubs w/studs. They are 9/16.

Also there's this for part numbers( these are DIFFERENT part numbers from the 14bolt! Very important, the splined shanks are different sizes on the 14bolt):

Dorman part # 610 - 283 is the part number for the STANDARD 1 ton Chevy, it fits 77-91 Chevy trucks. 9/16-18 thread, 2 17/32
long, .650 shoulder, 15/16 shoulder length.

Dorman part # 610 - 303 - fits 77-91 Chevy trucks. 9/16-18 thread, 3 inches long, .678 shoulder, 15/16 shoulder length. It is
identical in most measurements (including thread) to the 610-283, except that it is somewhat longer and has a knurl of .678. In actuality, the ones I measured never mic'd to more than .672.

If you need any further technical data on the stud sizes, I've got all the 14bolt stuff fairly handy.... available on Dorman's website if you feel like wading through it all. :D

Big thanks to Tacoma for reminding me about the D60 bible on Pirate. I just answered all my own questions. Only the 76-79 Ford D60s had 1/2 studs, the rest up to the Superduty's were all 9/16. I guess they must be a different pitch than the 14 bolt, or the threads were buggered up when I tried it.

Also according to the bible, the 4.10 and down carrier was the same for all D60s before 1998. Yea. That means my free limited slip will work and I will have an almost open front end.

See, I am only lazy for the first hour. Then I actually try. Thanks for your help guys

Cool, glad you're sorted out! :D

Ford always has to mess things up: 7-lug axles... weird 1/2" 60 studs... 31spline t-cases, etc etc
