My family (extended family included) tells me that they only want to go on an extended camping/wheeling trip once this year. Normally we do two a year. I assumed that ment one week in Moab since for me there is no other choice, last night I was told that they may want to go to Saint George instead. The question is: Where would you rather go for a week wheeling and why? My extended family says Saint George. Is there enough wheeling to keep me happy in Saint George for a week? I don't know. What do ya'll think?

I have only been to Moab once and that was as a passenger but I can say I had a lot of fun in St. George at the winter convention. And there seems to be a lot of trails down there.

I've been there in years past without a clue where the trails are. Definitely learn all that you can if St. George is the destination. A guide for a day would be well worth working out. I've been there 3 times to wheel and have been disappointed(cause i didn't know where to go).

Yep, some fun trails down there (between Cedar and St George) but you have to know where they are. What difficulty of trails is your family set up for?

I have never wheeled in St. George but I would have to say that Moab would be better. Just because I feel there is a diversity of trail ratings. No matter your skill level you can find trails in Moab that test your skills while offering great scenery at the same time. Even if you don't know exactly where all the trails are there is enough information out there you could find them with little effort.

Sand hollow is a good base camp for those with other-than-wheeling interests. Quads, Fishing, Waverunners and such. It always seems to be windy in the afternoon though(hence sand dunes).

If you have been to Moab a lot, St. George is awesome for a change. Plenty of trails there to keep almost anyone busy for a week. The trails I saw were pretty tough, but way awesome! Fewer people on the trails too. The locals are great about showing you around. Cannoncrawler could give you some insight. PM him.

I highly agree with this statement.

There is more to off roading than Moab trails. Which is why Moab is overrun, and in the sights of groups like SUWA... It seems that most folks feel that there's nowhere else in Utah to go but Moab... Which makes it nice for those who do venture outside of Moab.. Means less crowds for us :greg:

I say step outside of the norm and hit up St George..

West Rim

List of trails from the recent U4WDA Winter Convention:

Honeymoon Trail: Rated 2 Steep and narrow trail with off camber sections. This is a really scenic drive that gives you the chance to see Southern Utah's majestic views and landscapes.

Sliplock Gulch: Rated 3 w/3+ and 4 options
Trail begins with a run through some sand dunes. Highlights: Three waterfalls with the second being the most treacherous. There are a series of cracks and climbs to negotiate. Most obstacles have a bypass. Possible hot tub at end if time allows. Finish on Johnny’s trail if time and weather permits.

Fault Line (depending on weather conditions), West Rim, Rock Garden: Rated 3.5+
This is trail is the most popular and will have a limit on group size. Trail has a lot of slick rock and some nice challenges up the Fault Line Trail. The West Rim Trail has many obstacles but ends with many great obstacles at the Rock Garden. Bypasses are available for most of the difficult obstacles.

Milt's Mile: Rated 3 to 3.5 Fee Area, Flags required
Challenging run with some tough obstacles, some obstacles have a bypass. Trail ends at the sand dunes. Nice views of Pine Valley Mountain and Sand Hollow Reservoir.

The Maze: Rated 4+
Similar to West Rim but has more challenges. Lots of steep descents and climbs, and off camber situations. Usually has at least one break down. We will do the first half and if time permits will continue to the second half (rarely ran). NO Bypasses.

Warner Valley: Rated 4+ possible 4.5
A series of short trails with the focus on many challenging obstacles. We start at Washington Dam and go toward Warner Valley. Will do as many trails as time allows and ends back at Washington Dam.

John's Trail: Rated 4, a 4 rated trail with 4+ and 5 optional obstacles.
There are off camber sections and really soft sand spots. This trail is one obstacle after another and will really test your suspension. Body damage and rollovers are possible. This is definitely no Sunday drive.

Buggy Trail: Rated 5+, 10 buggies only
The first 10 Buggies to sign up get first shot, if the trail leader does not approve your vehicle it will not be allowed on the trail.

My family has been set up quite well! I do drive the Waggy so full sizes are needing to fit, that being said I don't care too much about body damage (I've been known to totally flatten the quarter panels and have been through six tail lights on this wagon alone!) The biggest benefit to Saint George is more places to eat etc. I really don't want to stay in a hotel though and my kids also really want to camp we would just like a K.O.A. or something out of town to tent it.
