Right now I have a 2001 tj with a dana 35, 4:10 gears and a Detroit locker and am thinking about upgrading to a super 35 kit. I am wondering how hard it is to do. Is it a simple bolt it? Do I need to reset up the gears? How much is my used Detroit worth? Just wondering if anuone has installed there own.

Thanks

Medsker,
I have the super 35 kit. I wish I would have spent the money setting up a D44 or ford 9" or ?? If you buy it new, you'll drop $800-$900 on the kit alone. Then you're looking at costs of setting it up. If you have the skills, or a buddy have the skills, you can save some money, but otherwise plan on spending some cash to get them setup.

You can pick up a Rear D44 from a Grand Waggy for anything from $50 (good luck, but they're out there) to $250. Don't know what pick & Pull wants for their axles, but you can go to www.car-part.com and do a search.

Spend another $200-$300 on getting the brackets set up (several shops with members on this board can do this for reasonable prices, or Charles at Rocky Mountain Axle can do it as well.

You still gotta find gears, master install kit and a locker, but for not a whole lot more, you'll end up with a better axle.

If you're really serious about it, I can sell you the super 35 w/Detroit and 4.10 gearing out of my rig. I need the cash to get my D44 set up.

Maybe save you a couple bills and get my 44 built up in the process......

Since the pinion depth does not have to be reset and backlash is fairly easy to figure out, a locker instal should be within the abillities of a resonably competent home mechanic with a dial indicator and some marking compound.

If you know what to look for in a good pattern....you might be able to get away without resetting the pinion depth. I would just have a professional install it so you have a warranty...that extra money in the long run might save you a lot of heartache...

I broke myu super 35 3 times in my old yj..... It was the lock right version wich is a little weaker than the newer detroit version... I only ran 33 inch tire, 4.10 gears and 4 cyl. engine....
I would stay away from this mod if i were you....
I would go for another axle if i were you....

Save your money and get a real axle that can handle any form of off-road abuse.

even an 8.8 will have a longer life. And if your lucky you get discs too. Personally I would not get anything less than a 44.

I would go for an 8.8...the D44 is a great (and prolly a little cheaper) but with the waggy axle you have to deal with lug pattern issues...the 8.8 will have the 5x4.5" lug pattern you need...if you get one from a 95+ exploder you get disc brakes and 31 spline shafts...

A lot to think about. I have access to dana 44 out of a tj that has no brackets and no guts in the pumpkin but would probably be a good axel to start with since it has the right bolt pattern.
