Has anyone ever installed one on a YJ?

How hard is it to do?

Would you recommend a hack and tap type?

yep I did it...pretty easy to do if ya have a clue..hey that rhymes:D:p

stay far far far away from the hack and tap type...people will argue they are a good budget solution but talk with Tom Woods or Jesse from Highangledriveline.com (leading driveline shops IMO) and they will tell you about the crappy experiences they have had...infact I think it was Tom Woods that wouldn;t even sell you a shaft if he knew it was running on a hack and tap...I went with the HD AA kit with a Tom Woods line...I couldn;t have been happier with it...that is until the day I got rid of the 231:D:D:D

I have the SYE kit on mine, I have the Tom Woods kit, the only problem that I have heard from that is Woods uses used parts. I'm not sure if that is true though. I haven't had any problems, fixed all vibrations (I have 1 minor vibration, but I don't have shims on axle perches.)

I actually had Jeeper's Off-Road install it (this was before I knew about Rock Logic :D )

I met them down in Moab and have been a bunch of guys I wheel with. They are somewhere on 3300 So, last I heard. I don't have an updated phone #, but they should be in the Phonebook.

They gave me a screamin deal for install. He didn't even charge me for the core and he did the driving back and forth down to Ogden to get my driveshaft, etc...

I have the Currie version in my XJ and it works perfectly. Tom Wood's does use, factory parts but he does a bunch of machine work on them adds two seals to it a new bearing and bunch of other stuff. You can't go wrong with Tom Wood's stuff he makes high quality parts and is very easy to deal with.

they're pretty easy to do yourself...but if you had a shop do it for you I could see them charing anywhere from $150-$200 in labor...

or, if you have an auto, like redrock, and your gonna swap that front end any way, you could just get yoself a d300 for 150 or so and be done with it.

Dana300 transfer case. Like the one in my Jeep. you have to get a different front axle though, I could sell you my current front with ARB and 4.56 gears(narrowed to your desired with) for a grand.

not positive on the crawl ratio in the D300 in the 231 its 2.72:1...the new Low max gears(very cool and stronger than tera) are available for the D300 for only about $700...

yes, it will bolt to your tranny, i tried this with the extra one I gave your dad, you will probably want a clocking ring though.
