After putting the transfer case back together I noticed it wasn't shifting properly. I took out the bolt on the bottom with the spring in it and the spring was bent. How is the spring supposed to go into the transfer case?

what do you mean it wasnt shifting correctly? Would it not go into 4 low? Many times you have have to cut the rod that protrudes out the back of the case that the shift forks ride on

Sometimes their castings are off a bit and ya have to hog out the hole the rod slides into.

I got it shifting smoothly but my concern is the spring. I have no idea where it goes. I have the shifter spring on.

is it the spring that holds the detent ball?

There is a ball? I assume that's what the spring is for. Could it have fallen out when the screw was taken out? Could I pull one out of another case and just put it back in?
