I have a 94 grand cherokee it has a 249 t case with full time four wheel drive in it but I think it is shot, it will work in low range but not high it just grinds. Can some one tell me what the differance between 231 242 249 t cases and if any are inerchangeable? Or if there is a way to fix mine. thanks

231 is a part-time 4x4 only 2 high, 4 high, 4 low
242 is part-time/full-Time 2 high 4 high full time, 4 high part time, 4 low

I know you can interchange 231 and 242 if you get the correct spline count, not sure on the 249. You can rebuild your 249 or have someone else do it but it may be pricey. There was a grand cherokee out at the picknpull last week but I didn't look to see if the tcase was still there.

HOw do you know the spline count.

Count? It'll either be 21 or 23 spline. One is 'late-model' (Jeep anything '90-91 and newer) and the other is the older pattern. Info probably available on the interweb in some kind of reliable form.
